I bought a house in Geneva last year that has a wood burning fireplace. The previous owners had not used it for 5 years. Supposedly everything is ok. So they say. I'm looking to find someone to clean the chimney and make sure everything is in fact ok and in tact. Don't really want to burn my house down or die from carbon monoxide. Anyone have any recommendations?

You might want to consider a pellet stove which is more efficient as well as easier to clean. We use those pellet stoves in our lake house and have very good experience with them.

Not possible. My fireplace is 70+ years old. The chimney is part of my living room, basement, and bedroom above. It's a double chimney as well. I'm keeping the fireplace. It's not our main source of heat.

Call your local vol fire dept. They will have someone or will be able too recommended someone. You are right too be on the safe side. Plus it is good to go in there and meet the Volunteers and get to know one other.

I recently used Sparks-Monroe (there is also a Sparks-Wayne) and they seemed to do a fine job... inspected and swept the chimney. I found a coupon on Living Social or Groupon that made it a very good deal, too.
