We went to the Southern Maine and NH regularly. Williamsburg, VA, the Adirondacks, and SC once. So Rochester wouldn't have been someplace crazy far compared to where we went. Its just we never heard of it as a tourist destination. Basically it is only heard of in passing weather reports.
Overall I think NYS does an awful job marketing itself. I mean, in Mass we saw Maine, Michigan, Virginia, Quebec, Nova Scotia Dep. of Tourism commercials, but never anything for NY.
When they came up we went to Ontario Beach (got some frozen Custard), we walked along the Erie Canal, and went to High Falls. They were only up for really a day, so there wasn't much time. They stayed overnight, but left early in the morning.

Based on the 2014 census the city of Rochester has a population of 7,238 people, the city of Richmond in 2015 had a population of 220,289. Are you saying that the inclusion of Irondequoit and Brighton would add 200,000+ residents to the population of Rochester?

Where did you get 7,238 people from? Rochester's population is roughly 210,000.

I'll retract my post, I did a double take when I got the result every time and assumed it was referring to the actual "city limits" rather than the MSA or whatever conglomerate of areas many statistics often choose to use.

Just to clear things up, if Rochester added Irondequoit and Brighton, its population would be about 300,000, give or take and would still only be 68 square miles. So, it would only be 8 square miles bigger than Richmond city limits in terms of land size if those two towns were annexed.

I agree when it comes to many other Upstate locations and is a part of the reason why I post the way I do on here. A lot of people have no clue about some of the things that are up here, but could be some things that they enjoy.

This is what I was expecting. Old rotting mills and repo houses.

I experienced the complete opposite downtown. Rochester came off better looking than Buffalo did as a whole.

Yes, the Irondequoit Bay and the beaches of Rochester. Who knew? Rochester needs to come up with a better PR plan.

Throw in the Erie Canal towns and it could market itself as a water lovers destination.

I guess I'm the odd one out here but I actually think NYS markets its tourism industry fairly well, at least better than most states. I'd say they are doing a good job with the whole "I Love NY" marketing campaign. However, I do agree that Rochester could greatly benefit by advertising more a bit more. I couldn't see many out-of-staters coming all the way to Rochester but definitely people within the state. As many of you have already mentioned, so many people, even long time NY residents have no idea of the great things Rochester has to offer.
