The Strathallen on East at the corner of Strathallen Park has always been a hotel. Did you mean she lived on Strathallen Park, the street? There are quite a few nice homes (now apts.) and carriage houses with apts.

There are always the entry door places like Paychex and Sutherland that are always hiring. I know people that have made careers at Paychex. ADT has a big presence in Henrietta. I worked for them and loved it. These are customer service jobs 10-12/hr with benefits and could get you established. U of R hires a lot of folks too, and maybe you could get educational assistance with them!

There is also Monroe County and The City of Rochester. They always need 911 dispatchers and the benefits are amazing if you can handle the stress of the work.

as a general rule of thumb stay out of the northern half of the city. It's cheap for a reason.
A roomate in a very good neighborhood in the SouthWedge/ U of R Strong/ Alex-East or NOTA is a good bet.
