What is the most distant radio station you've picked up over the air from a location in Greater Rochester?

My two/three answers are 96.9 WOUR (Utica) and a tie for 2nd between 104.5 Chum FM (Toronto) and 102.1 The Edge (Toronto). These were all heard through heavy static while driving along West Ridge Rd. in Parma/Greece. Note: The Edge is no longer listenable in Rochester because of a local FM on the same 102.1 frequency.

I’ve heard WBLK 93.7 from Buffalo in Chili/western suburbs, as well as WHEN 620 from Syracuse in the area(better reception in the eastern half of the area and during the day).

As mentioned in the Buffalo version of this thread, you can likely pick up many strong signal AM radio stations at night like 1000 AM from Chicago, KMOX 1120 AM from St. Louis, WBAL 1090 AM in Baltimore, WLW AM from Cincinnati, WHAS AM 840 from Louisville, WTIC AM 1080 in Hartford; WFAN AM 660/WCBS AM 880 and 1010 WINS AM(among some others) from NYC; WPHT(formerly WCAU) AM 1210 in Philadelphia, etc. I would say that an AM station on 1540 AM at night from Waterloo IA is currently the furthest radio station I’ve heard and they play University of Northern Iowa sporting events. A lot of those stations above would carry a lot of sporting events in the past, especially Baseball.

I would say 107.1 from Toronto. Used to be much better. I loved Psychodelic Sunday years ago. Localy, I understand that WHAM 1180 AM is a very strong station, heard from many states beyond

I'm not much of a radio enthusiast. Off hand, some Southern Ontario stations are the farthest reaching I've heard with my own ears, but I understand any of the 50,000 watt AM stations based anywhere between the Atlantic and the Mississippi can almost certainly be heard in Rochester during the night. Some stations in Mexico broadcast above 100,000 watts, so theoretically they could be picked up virtually anywhere on the continent. There's even a clip on YouTube of someone picking up WHAM 1180 from Scotland, so they travel quite far.

The most distant station I believe I've picked up was WKRL K-Rock out of North Syracuse/Utica/Rome area. Also hear a station called "Alternative Buffalo" once in a while, pretty sure those are over 40 miles away from home, all the others are within 40 miles of Rochester.

K-Rock 100.9 used to have a really solid signal, They used to reach right up to Lollypop Farms/Egypt Park on Route 31 back in the early-mid 2000s. Most Syracuse station aren't listenable until you cross Route 21 going east from Williamson or Palmyra. IIRC, WKRL had multiple transmitters northwest of Syracuse. One in Minetto (near Oswego) and one in Liverpool/North Syracuse. They also used to operate on 94.9 out of Rome/Utica.

I've heard a station out of Syracuse called Whyninetyfour (or something like that). Also hear the station out of Buffalo called "The Lake" (not to be confused with the new station out of Canandaigua which is much better).
