Rochester has a terrible NIMBY problem. Marketed and scheduled properly a ferry would work great between the two cities. There could be great collaboration with the colleges and universities and industry.

The reason the ferry failed was the original owner was a private citizen, and politicians from both sides of the isle wanted control over it. When they didn't get, things fell apart. For instance a $5000 charge every time it entered the port.

A new ferry would potentially be the best thing to happen to Rochester

There's some info I wasn't aware of!

However, I seemed to recall that the success of the ferry was based on big trucks being able to hop on in Rochester, then depart in Canada.....but there wasn't a "vehicle friendly" dock built on the Canadian side. Simply trucking passengers back and forth, didn't pay the bills.

You're correct. It was up to Louise Slaughter, (our congress person at the time.) to procure those approvals, which she didn't. Remember the original plan wasn't just Rochester. It was 1/3 us, 1/3 elsewhere in the state, and 1/3 continuing out of state.

On the other side, was Bill Nojay. He ran the transit system. the ferry tried to co-ordinate buse service with ferry arrivals, but had no luck. Nojay wanted control over the ferry

Yeah, it's coming back to me now.....but then again, some of the other "screw-ups" didn't help, either, and cost them $$$$. Like ordering the boat with "fresh water" engines, since the boat was going to be used primarily in Lake Ontario, but overlooking that it was being constructed in Australia, and therefore was going to be sailed across a couple of oceans, in salt water, in order to get to Rochester

Bottom line, the whole deal was a "cluster" from the outset. However, it's easy to do, when you're playing with other people's money.............
