This June I'm planning on driving between LA,CA and Portland,Oregon. On the way to Portland I will be staying in a hotel in Sacramento. Is there anything worth seeing in Sacramento or would it be good to wake up in Sacramento in the morning and continue driving? The last time I was in Sacramento was in 1987 which was many years ago.

All I remember was old town and a train museaum.

Those are still the main tourist attractions, but they aren't the only ones--the other standards are places like Sutter's Fort, the Governor's Mansion, California State Capitol, Stanford Mansion, California Museum, and the Crocker Art Museum. There is also the California Auto Museum (it was the Towe Ford Museum last time you came through) and also the California Aerospace Museum at former McClellan Air Force Base.

The California State Capitol and Capitol Park are free, but I don't know if they are open to the public on weekends. On weekdays it's free, but you have to pass through a metal detector. The park around the building is a 25 acre arboretum and memorial collection that is interesting to wander around in its own right, the capitol has museum exhibit areas and you can wander around the building on your own, checking out the sausage factory that is our state government.

Weekdays are when the best places to eat lunch are open, along K and L Street between about 10th and 13th.

If you're staying somewhere other than downtown, let us know and we can point you in the direction of neat stuff wherever you're staying.

Do you know where your hotel is? If you haven't chosen it yet, you could make a reservation to stay on board the Delta King, a restored riverboat in Old Sacramento that hadn't quite opened when you last came through. It's a floating hotel, restaurant, bar and theater, permanently moored to the dock.

Sadly, since 1987, the only place worth visiting in Sac is still old town ...

Are you only interested in touristy-type of things? I can think of all kinds of cool places to walk, hike, bike if you are interested (& once I have Internet access from my MacBook again, I will list them).

Well, you could watch a movie at the historic Crest Theater. Raft down the American River from Sunrise to Ancil Hoffman (or further!) if you are adventerous. Attend a baseball game at Raley Field. Visit the Aerospace Museum at McClellan AFB. Catch a Kings basketball game (before they move!) or other event at the arena. Check out the Sacramento Zoo. Take a tour of the Crocker Art Museum. Eat a Squeeze Burger at Squeeze Inn (as seen on Food Network). Consume a slice of Death By Chocolate at local landmark Rick's Desert Diner. Or stroll through one of the many farmers markets that happen each week that feature live music and food.

Have fun!

Honestly? I have lived here since 2007 and can't recommend anything worth seeing here. Really really.

Old Sacramento is a joke of reproductions and junk shops, and a great place to get shot by a gang member.

I would speed right on through after getting a good night's sleep and get to Portland - where there actually is interesting stuff to look at - as soon as possible.

Crest Theatre is very cool. Showtimes are kind of intermittent and the marquee and posters out front are confusing and a bit misleading (as to what is actually playing opposed to what's coming).
One of the biggest Wal-Marts on the west coast is located right in West Sacramento too. LOL

Are they hiring in Portland? If you need any one to help you brush up your resume, you can send it my way.

I feel very, very sorry for the folks who actually live in Sacramento and don't realize what a treasure they have. If you can, sign up for a docent-guided tour of the Old Sac Cemetery on Saturday mornings. Full of gunslingers, madams, one of the Earp brothers is buried there. Sacramento is gold (!) for those who appreciate history. Have a great time!
