I could possibly be transplanting from a relatively smaller suburban type city to Sacramento. I have always lived in a suburban-ish city and am looking for a downtown apt that would encompass all the amenities that has to offer. I am a single, mid thirties professional with no kids to consider. I have a lot of friends that live in cities such as Dallas and prefer the downtown type of high-rise living arrangement, yet do not know much about Sacramento. Which areas are the enjoyable for meeting people, exercising, eating etc. Also, which high-rise apts. woud be a good fit for this as well. ANy advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There isn't much in Sacramento for high-rise living. There are some newer multi-unit buildings, but they aren't really high-rise. As far as living downtown, the locals refer to it as the Central City, the Grid, or Midtown. The best places are in older apartments or houses converted to apartments. They typically range from two to six or so apartments per building.

I don't know what the going rents are in that area. I got priced out of three places in a matter of a few years and couldn't find anything I could afford, and just left the area behind me. Unless I have a meetup Downtown, I generally don't go down there due to the traffic and parking.

If you have the time I would suggest spending several days exploring the area and deciding what you like and what part of the area you want to live in. If you have to work any distance from Downtown and the work location isn't along the light rail line, I would suggest living closer to work to avoid traffic and commute expenses. I lived Downtown for many years and had to work in Roseville, Rocklin, Folsom, Auburn, and many other places where I wished I lived much closer.
