I was researching rental houses in West Sac and some of the new areas look nice. When I look up addresses in crimestoppers report it doesn't show a lot of crime. But when I look up W. Sac in "Sperling's" city ratings it shows it at a 7 out of 10, with 10 being the worst. Sacramento itself is only like a 4 out of 10. Is it really any different than anywhere else like downtown, midtown, N.Natomas?

Depends on if they are lumping Northern West Sac into their crime - because it's AWFUL there. Lots of gang activity and drugs and break ins, really a rough part of Sac.

Otherwise I hear the newer developments are nice

And N Natomas is MUCH better then S. Natomas - which is crime ridden

What I was looking at was the south side of west sac. It is a newer and does have the appearance of a nicer area. Maybe it is getting mixed in with the rougher north side of west sac when the stats for crime are determined. Also I have looked at north natomas vs south natomas and do see quite a difference.

I feel very safe on the Southport side of West Sac. But, as for the North side being really unsafe, I guess I have never felt unsafe on that side of town in terms of shopping. I think the unsafe aspect of it is way overblown. This is coming from a single woman. It is more of an old rep.

I think there are parts of Sac that I feel way more concerned about driving through. I can't think of any part of West Sac that makes me feel that way. This is of course my subjective opinion.

I live in the Southport area of West Sac as well. I feel very safe there, much more so than I did in my previous residence in the Pocket area of Sacramento (which is a nice area). It's a quiet, pretty neighborhood, and we are very happy there.

I routinely drive up to the northern side of West Sac for food, shopping, etc. Yes, it is a little older and more run down there, with chain link fences dominating many streets. There is also some gang activity and some property crime up there. However, I've never really felt like I was in danger... maybe the taquerias are worth it? In any event, I feel much safer driving in Broderick/Bryte than I do driving in the Meadowview area of Sacramento, for what that's worth.

ITA. We lived in the Southport area when it was pretty much brand new from 2001 to 2004 and I never felt uncomfortable. None of the houses south of Marshall Rd had been developed, it was just farm land. This was before all the new stores went up off Jefferson and I'd have to go to Raley's in the northern part of W. Sac. Never felt threatened or afraid. Was usually by myself and eventually was toting a baby with me. When we lived in the Pocket prior to that, I was definitely more cautious driving down Meadowview Rd and avoided it like the plague. We witnessed more crime in Pocket than we did in W Sac. In fact, we never experienced any crime in W Sac while we were living there.
