My daughter just accepted a job offer in Salem. We are from Syracuse, NY. I am looking for some information about the deaf community. She is not deaf but she will be working with the deaf and most likely would be looking for a place to rent near the deaf community.

We are not sure how to go about and look for apartments online without physically being there to see the area. Please help be our eyes while we try to prepare her for this transition from across the country.

I appreciate any help we receive.

There is no "Deaf Community", but there are many who are deaf living throughout Salem. Salem as a larger than usual ASL capable population, many working in service jobs accessible to the Deaf. ASl is the most popular Language for Credit class at Chemeketa.

Worth considering contacting local resources. Even if she's not going to be assoc. with Chemeketa or the School for the Deaf, they may be willing to advise on local community/resources (particularly if she'd be willing to be a resource or volunteer for them down the road):

Clubs and Organizations
Oregon School for the Deaf

Likewise, there's a FB page for the Oregon Assoc. of the Deaf - presuming she's on FB I'd recommend seeing what resources/contacts are available there.

Since she's working with the deaf, it's possible the HR dept. at her employer will have some suggestions as well.

Thank you bler144. She has had great luck with reaching out the Oregon Association for the Deaf. The board has been very helpful directing her to safer neighborhoods and upcoming events. She already fells like she made some good connections. I appreciate your help.

If she is looking for entertainment, the bar where I play Texas Hold'em League, seems to be a gathering spot for ASL signers. It is the 501 on Portland Road. Most of the employees sign also.

The School for the Deaf is in Highland, but Grant and Englewood are close by. Bush Park and Fairmount would be an easy drive over there too.
