Hi all,

A dear friend of my daughter lives and works near SLC. She's pregnant and the father is well, a loser. My daughter and I have been reaching out and people have donated some nice baby clothes and one even sent her some money.

She works so hard but because the Dad, who I think will eventually turn out to be a deadbeat, is not in a position to provide, she is still in need of items like a stroller, car seat, crib, etc.

She signed up for WIC. Do you know if that helps pregnant women or only after the baby is born? Do you know any place that will help her with these larger items? They don't have to be new but gently used in decent condition.

We have a place where I live that helps Moms but since I don't know Utah I could use some ideas of where to send her.

She's like a 2nd daughter to me and I wish I could help but being a widow my self I just don't have the funds, but can help in other ways. Feel free to PM me!

Thanks in advance for your help!

AO

I know she probably won't, but I wish she would put the child up for adoption. That would likely be better for her and the child.

Sorry I don't have any specifics.

She should apply for Medicaid right away. If she has insurance through her work it might be inadequate. She can go to jobs.utah.gov/mycase or go to her nearest Dept. of Workforce Services office for a paper application.

At some point she'll probably have to stop working, she can apply for foodstamps and financial assistance through the same agency. She may also want to contact the Office of Recovery Services and see what is needed to legalize paternity.

I'm not sure what NGO's are available in northern Utah but there should probably be quite a few. United Way/211 might be able to provide more info.

Yes, WIC will help her during pregnancy and until the child is 5, I believe.

She can also look at Kid to Kid, which is a store that buys and sells used clothing and kids toys. I’m not sure about cribs or car seats however, for safety reasons.
She can also check out Deseret Industries, which is an LDS run thrift store.
