You can call the Utah Bar Assoc and ask for a referal for where you live or work so it would be convenient to go to the office. And you can ask about retainers, not sure they will tell you but you can call the names they give you to ask.

I live in West Jordan.

I've been calling divorce attorneys (about 60+, this includes the referrals from the Utah State Bar Assoc.) for well over 2 weeks since I was served on April 15th and to no avail. They have all asked for a min. of $1000.00-$5000.00 retainer. My husband left me with no financial resources and all the financial responsibilities. Our daughter graduates on June 5th and I've been trying to take care of all the fee's that entails as well try to help her enjoy the remainder of her senior year in the midst of this irrational madness.

If you know anyone willing to take my case with a $500 retainer and a payment plan that would be ideal. As part of the divorce I'm going to ask for my husband to pay for my attorney since this is his decision and he makes about 3 times as much as I do a month. His decision has come as a total shock considering we've been together for 25 years. I'm devastated to say the least. I've exhausted all the referrals from family and friends and thought if I enlisted a greater group that maybe, just maybe I would find someone.

Thank you, for your posts... I'll keep researching and hoping the system I've lived by doesn't fail me now....I just find it hard to believe that if you play by the rules and live a clean, honest life it won't come back to you full fold.

Try calling the domestic violence group - they may know of someone willing to help women in bad situations, altho' I know you didn't say DSV. I just thought some of their lawyers might be willing to work for less. Good luck!

Your income may qualify you for representation with the Legal Aid Society of Salt Lake. You can look their number up in the phone book or ask the Utah Bar Association for it.

I am sorry if you find divorce expensive. In a nutshell, there is no insurance program like health insurance to pay for the cost. A $1000 retainer is not unreasonable when there are issues involved in the divorce (splitting property, child custody, alimony, etc.) At least, its not unreasonable in the sense that it will take an attorney upwards of 10 hours of time to resolve the problem. One hundred dollars an hour sounds like alot until you consider the cost of paying for office staff, rent, and the telephone company. If these issues don't exist in a divorce, a divorce can be obtained without an attorney by downloading forms from the website of the Utah Bar Association. Welcome to the Utah State Bar

Again, check out Legal Aid.

Ive called & I don't qualify for legal aid cause you have to
make 125% below the poverty level or be abused which neither apply.

The good news is I received an email today from an attorney who will help me prepare my response for $180.00 an hour, which I'm extremely thankful! He also agreed to help me represent myself if I can't come up with the money for a retainer.

Thank you again for all the advice, the insight was very much appreciated :0) I'm sure this is only the beginning of this very difficult journey..

I'm sorry you have to go through this - I got divorced a long time ago, with no real problems, and it was still gut-wrenching. I can only tell you that you will get to a place of contentment at last. Good luck!

Thank you SouthernBelle for the sound advice, its kind of funny how I have the hardest time talking about my situation with many in my family but I feel so comfortable sharing how I feel on this very public forum... Maybe because I don't have to live up to any ones expectations.

Its actually pretty liberating....LOL. Silly, right ?!
