I know people can be total car addicts..But I like to ride my bike. I have been doing pittsburgh hills 5-10 miles at least without any issue at all. Isnt it all flat there? Here is gets up in the 80s and sometimes 90s with 50% humidity and higher in the summer.

So is it just one of those "its nice to have a car" or do you really need one. By the sounds of the winters I will need one.

I for sure wouldnt ride one in the winter, thats asking for a crash. Summers get in the 100's sometimes so you can ride but its pretty damn hot. Spring and fall I suppose it would be fine although depending on where you live in the valley there could be some pretty decent size hills to truck it up. If it was 1-2 miles id probably be down but im not riding 10 miles haha

I think it would depend on where you live and where you need to bike to.

most of the draper, sandy, cottonwood heights, holladay and east salt lake city are towards the benches. The benches are the areas closer to the mountains.. You mentioned in your post that you think its flat here, its not its surrounded by mountains

I thought it might be flat in the basin area...Pittsburgh has some hills you have to almost crawl up in the winter..lol

Ok..towards the east are the hills...

I am going to start looking at all the places I need to go (store etc) and map it out a bit.

Any good used car dealers recc around SLC?

there are a ton of them all around. Cant recomend one but there are more then enough to chose from. there are alot of bike lanes here which are good. If you dont have a car already and your really interested in riding a bike full time. Just get a super cheap car just for the rainy/snow days. Also map out bus and trax lines for where you will need to go and where you live. You can bring your bike on the busses and trains.

I've just never figured out how people do stuff like grocery shopping without a car. I guess you could take public transit, but it just seems so inconvenient.

Think of the Salt Lake valley as being like a huge bowl. It's flat on the bottom, but then starts sloping upwards on the sides. Any part of the city that it built up against the side of the mountain is called "the benches." Downtown Salt Lake City may have only rain on days where the benches twenty minutes away may have four or five inches of snow.
