To the OP: I think Dallas or Houston would be much more "open" about your lifestyle choices (particularly since you are wanting children). However, there are parts of SA that are more "accepting" than others. BN had a good suggestion with King William, but even parts of the suburbs can be well-suited. We live in the NW suburbs, and have a lesbian couple down our street and they have two young adopted boys. They don't get treated any differently than any other neighbor, and are as nice as they can be.

San Antonians stare at a lot of people, heck, a lot of people stare at a lot of people. I travel to Europe regularly and I see people staring at other people all the time! Let 'em stare!

But what you don't hear a lot about here are "hate crimes" if that is what you're concerned about. It does happen on occasion, as it would in any city of 2M; but it's a rare occurrence.

That said, SA is very conservative; but it is also a very friendly city and unless you are blatantly annoying others--like some overly-opinionated Californian--folks will pretty much leave you alone. I honestly don't think anyone will do anything except stare, and in some places that probably won't even.

No, the only folks that draw the ire of San Antonians are big-mouthed, idiotic know-it-alls who continually insert unsubstantiated and baseless blatherings despite continuously being corrected by those who have actual firsthand knowledge of the subject. But I won't name names...

Oh, and I've been to southern California and it's crap IMO!

Cheers! M2

I detest that when, as a gay man or woman, you ask where to live in a city, so many people immediately recommend a spot close to the bars and clubs. I find it to be ridiculous and just plain uninformed. Seriously, when people mention that they're religious in nature, would you immediately recommend them living behind Cornerstone Church? Of course not.

Not all of the GLBT community goes to bars, drinks and then dances the night away. There are some of us who prefer a much more quiet lifestyle that allow us to ingrain into a neighborhood and ultimately combat the still-around stereotype.

FWIW - even with a family, we like living near bars....just not right next door. Now, of course we prefer the family friendly pub atmosphere of Southtown's best places, but having kids hasn't meant we wanted to move to the suburbs

Of course, one can be lesbian and prefer the suburbs.

Me personally, if I were you, I wouldn't limit myself to any certain area. Go where you feel it's a good fit as a neighborhood. San Antonio (it's no secret) definitely leans on the conservative side unfortunately.

Still, in every city and in every state there will be closeminded people who have a problem with you being who you are. You continue to be who you are and do what you wish with your female partner regardless what anyone thinks.

72% of Americans were against interacial marriage in the 1960s before the Supreme Court ruled interacial marriage bans where unconstitutional, so we have come a long way.

If anyone has a problem with you and your partner, that's THEIR problem.

You live your life as you please and with no apology or no regard for others and THEIR closemindedness.

Goodluck!

I am a 42 yo gay professional male and I actually live in Olmos Park Terrace. It is very safe and pet and gay friendly and I would highly recommend! I am also a professional resume and public relations writer so if you need any assistance with a resume portfolio targeted towards SA businesses please let me know and I can help.

I am interested in the Midtown, King Williams and Olmos Park Terrace. The problem is I can't find any housing areas in those neighborhoods or areas. We plan on getting a house built so if you know of any home builders in those areas please let me know. We are interested in DR Horton and/or KB Homes. Also how are the kids in those areas. Are there alot of kids or do you see any?

Thank you everyone ssssssssoooooo much for your help!!

Let me just say that given a choice between KB homes and having a drunk, one-eyed jackass build my house, I'd go with the jackass every time! It's been my personal experience that KB construction quality can best be described as non-existent.

Sorry, but why would anyone want to put a home built by KB or DR Horton in those areas?

If I am not mistaken, those areas you mentioned are historical districts and would not allow that to happen unless of course the style of the home is designed to fit in which I doubt either of the two builders will be willing to comply with.

You would be better off buying an existing home in the areas you mentioned.

There is a reason you're not finding those builders in those areas - those are builders for mass produced subdivisions, not historic districts. You can find a few lots for building, but you'll need to find an independent builder. If you're interested, DM me and I'll suggest a few. Mostly you'll find historic homes in varying states available for sale - lots on the market right now.

I'd say if you're interested in those builders, you'll need to focus your searches on the suburbs rather than in-town.

In King William/Lavaca/Southtown, kids are EVERYWHERE. There's a local group called King William Area Kids with monthly activities, as well as lots of playgroups, and random meet ups at neighborhood locales. We can't go anywhere without seeing kids, but since we have them, that's a good thing

And there's only one William, so it's King William (King Wilhem) not Williams.

Oh, and do a search on realtor.com for zip codes 78210 and 78205 for southtown. I'm not sure of the zips for the other areas. That'll give you an idea of the type of housing available.
