Easy, the Mossberg 500. It's a great shottie and not too expensive.

Load it with Magnum 00-buckshot, none of that useless birdshot. For one, if the person threatening you hides behind a wall or furniture, the buckshot will go through it and take 'em down. Birdshot is exactly that, for birds. Unless your attacker is a sparrow, don't bother!

We are also thinking of getting tasers. One for the front door and a secondary for the bedroom. Any taser advice would be welcomed.
Tasers are horrible self-defense weapons. The police only use them as compliance weapons, never for self-defense!

They are useless if you miss the intended target, if there is more than one person, or if the individual is wearing thick clothes. They are not also overly reliable and often don't work as advertise.

You are better off getting mace or some other kind of repellent. Actually, the stuff you use on hornet's nests is good as well, it will incapacitate the intended target and usually will shoot a very good distance (30 ft or more). the only downside is that it won't easily fit in most purses, but for at home it can be very effective.

But even then, a firearm (and especially a shotgun) make for better home defense weapons!

Cheers! M2

Anyone have insider info on this case? Particularly what kind of gun the lady used? I'm interested in knowing whether it was the caliber or placement that was so effective. This was a great story with a happy ending, even though I already mentioned it in the OT section yesterday...
and people that try to go the less lethal route really need to think things through more. It took a while, but I've finally convinced my wife that the goal is to stop the threat, not try to only hurt the person and make as little mess as possible. As long as you still have your life, it's all good.

LOL yeah, sounds like it. Any long lasting effects from it the burglar should be aware of? I'm guessing they have but a matter of minutes to wash it out before resident foiling their plans becomes the last thing they'll remember seeing?

This story "made my day". Chalk up another one for the good guys and gals!

The lessons of this incident might -- hopefully -- save the lives of a few potential/pee-wee thugs out there. To wit, better think long and hard as to whether or not that TV set or whatever else you want is worth your life. At least in Texas.

Who cares? We got Castle Doctrine back in 2007, so anyone foolish enough to break into somebody's house has no legal recourse against the person defending their home!

Honestly, if a criminal who breaks into my house was lucky enough to only get hornet spray in their face, they should play the lottery as it will have been their lucky day!

Seriously, it should incapacitate the intruder long enough for someone to part their hair with a blunt object. Or it will cause them to flee, but there is no legal requirement to retreat in Texas (God bless Texas! http://www.texasguntalk.com/forums/images/smilies/texas.gif (broken link)) and if any criminal thinks I am going to run away they are in for a big shock!

Cheers! M2

Yeah that's about what I was thinking with incapacitating them. That, and it seems to kill hornets and any other bugs that I've nuked with the stuff fast enough. They probably wouldn't be dead but they'd wish the homeowner hit them with a bullet instead for a while anyway.

edit: No legal requirement to retreat here either (Persons not "required to needlessly retreat." / )

Ok, this is one of the few times where the Republican in me comes out. Had it been in a blue state, she would probably be tried for murder. Well, good for her! I live on the NE side of SA, near Bulverde and 1604, and I am sick of watching my quiet neighborhood slowly turn into the ghetto! What is it with home invasions lately all over the north side?

This lady is probably going through a lot right now, but she had NO CHOICE! And yes...God Bless Texas!

Arm yourself with what my father used---a sawed-off shot gun. Highly illegal in most states, but effective. We actually had police recommend them for those without much skill shooting---they spray a wide radius.

Better judged by 12 than carried by 6!

Actually, he never "used" it, that's what he kept for defense, and we lived in Detroit, need I say more!
