I currently live in Ohio, and want to relocate to SA within the next few years. But I have NO CLUE how to go about figuring out what areas are good to work in and live in.

I'm thinking about enrolling at the Milan Institute on the northwest side, as well. (If anyone has any feedback on that, I'd appreciate it.) I'm currently in the property management industry, so I'd probably be looking for work at an apartment community and would want to live there, as well, and it would be great if I could live/work and go to school close together, but only if I live/work in a decent neighborhood.

Can anybody help me?

You really don't want to live near Milan Institute. It's on the NE side I think?

There's a Milan Institute on the Northwest Side and the Southside of SA too.
As for the quality of the school, I think it's something you would need to ask current and former students as Milan is considered a trade school of sorts to get a better feel.

For the program I'm interested in, it's the Milan on the Northeast side. So does that mean that the Northeast side isn't good?

As with any other community, there are pockets - some good, others not. Thing is, what WE might consider "blighted", you might think of as "eccentric". I always recommend to someone moving into a new that they stay in a hotel for a week or two as they get their bearings, then try to find a short-term lease (say, 6 mos) as they evaluate things.

Looking at their website, there are three Milans: Ingram, South, and Windcrest. None of those sound like good areas. I would choose an apartment west of Perrin Beitel and it would still be a short drive. Austin Hwy has also gotten a lot better which is also just a short drive away.

I'd stay away from pound shops and drive through liquor stores.

Google Maps/Street View. Look for how run down and tagged up things are and you'll get an idea.
