Looking for a day trip to make some weekend? How about tomorrow?

Recently, Texas Monthly did a feature on the 50 best burgers in Texas and a little obscure cafe in the hill country made #3 on the list. It's called ALAMO SPRINGS CAFE and it's located near the "Old Tunnel Wildlife" area in the boonies somewhere SE of Fredericksburg. This is a type of place that is worth the drive. They are featured on the front cover:

My verdict on the burger? I'd give it 4 stars out of 5. It was very good and the bread sealed the deal, i think. The bread was sweet and chewy, but it worked well with the burger. Make sure you tell the waitress to have them make the burger the way they are known for (green chili).

Bleh! With Bobby J's, Lord's Kitchen, Bracken Cafe and a host of other wonderful burger joints in and around San Antonio, I don't see the need to go all the way to Fredericksburg for a burger!

Plus, if I am up that way, I either hit one of the German restaurants or my other favorite, the Hanger Hotel Diner!

But if I was at the Old Tunnel Wildlife and hungry, I would check it out. I like that area, Grapetown is just 3.5 miles north of there and is home to one of the oldest schützenbunds ("shooting clubs") in Texas.

Cheers! M2

Here's a cell phone pic I took a week ago:

I love hamburgers, but this one was pretty freakin' fantastic.

I guess you have a pretty big backyard

Most people say that the best burger in San Antonio is Chris Madrid.....
Best burger I've ever had in San Antonio is...
Mo Mak's Backyard just North of the airport. - Family Restaurant San Antonio Texas
Here's the menu - Menu (http://www.momaks.com/156070.html - broken link)

If you go, make sure that you have the
The Mak Tex-Mex burger
"Topped with refried black beans, fresh pico de gallo, jalapenos, guacamole, cheddar cheese and seasoned tortilla chips"

BTW, This place is excellent for kids to go and play in their huge playground.

Ate at Chris Madrids today. I'd rate it somewhere around #5 or so, after Bobby J's, Bob's Big Burgers, Bracken Cafe, Lords' Kitchen and even Chester's.

You know - Cracker Barrel makes a decent burger and Jim's isn't bad.

Price is right - like them much better than Smash for example.

But Bobby J's in near me and great. BTW, the story is old - 2009. Burger world changes fast.

Just ate Bobby J's today, after a long hiatus, and they were spot on. (we had a not-so-good one there a year or so ago) Chris Madrid's has gotten pretty gnarly, not the good gnarly either.

The one featured on the magazine cover looks great, but I am a purist....I don't put all the fancy toppings on mine. Just the standard minus the tomato and pickles (pickles go on the side ) I am sure it's delicious but it's just not the burger for me.
