This isn't a socialist state, many people here work hard for their money and like to spend it on nice things. There's no reason to belittle anyone because they would like to invest in higher-end quality equipment for their hobbies.

Based on that logic, everyone should be driving old VW Beetles as well!

You can get a good high quality bike for around $300 at the Performance Bike store. I went with the cheapest China-made model and have not had any problems other than flats ('cuz I go off road).
I agree with that!! The really expensive bikes are for professional bikers. A "normal" city user do not need all those gadgets.
Prices will be high so long there are customers willing to pay that much!

Like others said, you can purchase a decent bike for few hundreds or even less if you buy used.
I brought me a folded bike that was little more expensive than the regular one, because I wanted it to fit in my car trunk. However, this is a normal bike without the expensive extras I would not use anyway...

Walmart.com: Huffy Men's Cranbrook 26'' Dark Blue Cruiser/Comfort Bike with Bonus $20 eGift Card: Bikes & Riding Toys

Plus there is a HUGE supply of bicycles on the secondary market. You can pick on up at Goodwill or the Salvation Army for $20 in most places.

I had a GIANT bike that I had over $1,000 into.

But, that was back in Ottawa Canada where there was an extensive bicycle path system and riding with the cars was not necessary to get places.

The path system in Ottawa...

Nothing like that down here so I don't bicycle here.

I would consider it worth the price if there was a system of bicycle pathways such that I could get from Schertz to downtown; however, there isn't and I'm not sinking 1k into a bike to ride around the neighborhood.

I remember the CCM and lusted after a 3-speed model for months. Dad finally bought it for me at the grand old price of $120 which was considered expensive back then.

Now there are specialty bikes with more gears than a semi.
