New KB neighborhoods (Houston, San Antonio, Anton: home builder, subdivisions, live)

Just wondering your opinion on the new Stone Oak, NW Military KB communities. The homes look nice and big. Do you think these are better constructed and they learned from their mistakes?

Well, given that they haven't to date, I wouldn't hold my breath. Seriously - there is NO way I'd set foot in one of their developments.

Quite actually their build quality has gone up. Since their debacle that started in Northampton out by Randolph and slowly made the company disintegrate, they have taken a step back to look at what they are doing. Their plans and the usual lots of square feet for the dollar and the ever present cut all all corners where possible is still there. But their methodology has improved a lot. To consider them a build quality to match that of the usual in Stone Oak though is a stretch at best. But this is far from their first attempt to build into that economic base. This would be their third shot at it in the same area. You might find it interesting that the parent company builds in the high end subdivisions in California. But since Ray Ellison and Rayco days of throw 'em up cheap and don't look back, they've had a hard time getting past that stigma here.

Where is the development in Stone Oak?

Keep in mind that the base prices you see for KB homes include NOTHING extra.

If you want your house to look similar to the models, you're looking at tens of thousands above the base price.

I have a good friend who bought a house in Woods of Alon (the NW Miliatary KB home community). They've been there for a couple years and seems pretty happy so far. House has a nice layout and was well equiped for the price. Also they backyard faces a greenbelt, so it's nice too. YMMV.

San Antonio has a lot of new home builder, and KB has improved the home into Energy Star, there are several comunity near 281 North,
1. Quarry at Iron Mountain located at Hardy Oak , 2630 - 5211 sqft.
2. Saddle Mountain 281north/Evans 1582 -3728 sqft
3. Fox Grove located accross from JW Mariott still have some lots with green belt
4. La Fontana off 281 N/Evans to the right 1500 - 3000 sqft. , the newest subdiv.

I don't know about those neighborhoods, but I have lived in a KB home in Houston (tomball, tx) since 2007, and it has held up well.

It's been through hurricane IKE and the roof is fine (unlike many older homes).

It is true, the base price was cheap, but it took $10k in options to get it to what I liked. But still reasonable ($93k total for a starter 2 story).


It still looks great and has required only some minor caulking and touch up paint on any corners that have expanded.

The in law's place that was built by KB in 2007 has more squeaks than our house which was built 50 years earlier, and been through two major hurricanes.

I was advised by many SA natives and people in general to stay away of KB homes. Cute houses, we were ready to put the first small deposit to start building.. but glad we didn't..
