Chama Gaucha (Brazilian steakhouse) tops my list. If you don't want to pay the $42 or so for dinner, go for lunch when it's around $27 and just as much food.

I also love Carrabbas Italian Grill.

If you're looking for a good hamburger, head on over to Bigz Burgers, just not on Monday (when they are closed), OR the Longhorn Cafe.

For very good authentic Mexican food (the owners are from Mexico City), Guajillo's off of I-410 is excellent, great taco plates.

If your looking for a great drink Feast has a great vibe going. (the food was lacking) Chama Gaucha and 20NINE are some of my favorites.

Clearly, if you love food, you'll know well enough to disregard the chain restaurant recommendations, as well as the "there's no good restaurants in SA" crowd. The following are places I'd recommend mostly because they're unique to SA. Of course, there are several other places (Il Sogno, Sandbar, Bohanan's) that are really great restaurants, but they serve the sort of stuff you can get in most American cities (plus, they're fairly expensive). And as most people have said, if you must go to the Riverwalk, go drink there and eat elsewhere. In no order:

Taco Haven (breakfast). If you're gonna be in SA, you have to know what tacos are all about, and this place is at the top of the heap. Taco Taco and Panchitos are also very solid, as is Original Donut Shop (for tacos, although the donuts are pretty good, too).

El Buccanero. Mexican-style seafood. Awesome stuff. BYOB.

Bakery Lorraine. A bakery food truck owned by a husband/wife team who worked for Thomas Keller. Seriously. World-class pastry (they're usually at the Quarry Farmers Market on Sundays).

Los Barrios. Probably my favorite place to introduce newbies to Tex-Mex. La Fogata and Rosario's are also good.

Bin 555. Weird location, half-assed design, horrible wine mark-ups, and super-bad-ass food that's as good as anything in SA (modern American).

Restaurant Gwendolyn. Hyper-local cooking. Expensive. Really good.

Chris Madrid's. Unlike any other hamburger in the world (not that it's superior, just different). Go get the bean burger and dump a bunch of pico de gallo on it).

Cascabels. For their Birria or Pozole.

The Monterey. Hard to describe. Just go.

Brown Coffee Company. The best roaster in Texas, making the best coffee in Texas, out of a total dump of a shop. Awesome stuff.

LaTuna, Friendly Spot, and Beethoven Hall for good-to-great beers and awesome beer garden atmospheres. Ruben's for tamales (take-out). Esquire & Bohanan's for cocktails. Texas Ice House on Blanco for an old-school icehouse experience. If you want barbecue, I'd drive to Luling (about 45 miles east) and eat at City Market before I went anywhere in SA.

Have a good trip.

What the OP stated is above with a certain section bolded. If they didn't want chains, they probably would've mentioned that instead of stating what is in bold above.
I love how the Interweb police love speaking for others....

As far as my input.. can't think of any restaurant that stands out as something not to be missed. There are some OK ones, but not the quality I've seen in other cities. If you want SA food, just pick a taqueria. That's us and that's how we roll, which is why I am where I am...

He did ask for places to eat and if people say avoid chains then let them. It is not against TOS to reccomend against going to chains. To me, it would make no sense if he comes here to eat at a resturant that he can find back at home while he is visiting SA.

I am not too crazy about chain resturants, but will eat at them locally. If I am traveling, I want to see what unique places I can find.

Chain restaurants aren't a "type" of food.

Oh, and excellent input. Quite helpful for the OP, I'm sure...

Yeah, reading comprehension is for losers.. Some of y'all really make this WAY too easy. The OP's initial post was four whole entire sentences long and there wasn't even one tiny part of it that inferred the desire to dismiss anything. The actual words used were "so the preference doesn't matter". How could anyone not comprehend that? seriously..

as far as my input, that was mine. Any person with a functional IQ should interpret what I said to mean that I haven't seen any restaurants that stuck out to me. As in if I left this city today and never returned, there wouldn't be anything I would miss food-wise. Or for the simpler types out there.. the food isn't that great. It's not a food city, unless you're talking about taquerias. There's a billion of them here and some are pretty good, but not the type of food you absolutely couldn't live without.
