My wife and I are looking at homes around the 1604/281 area, mainly inside the 1604. We would love to live in a neighborhood with access to a public/neighborhood/community pool, but is seems like a lot of the older neighborhoods in the area don't offer that. Or if they do, we can't seem to figure out how to identify the neighborhoods that have them.

Does anyone have any good tips for finding areas up north with pools?

If you are looking in older neighborhoods, most likely some of the homes have their own pool.

You can try looking into buying a home with an existing pool but be prepared to deal with the maintenance required of one!

Having one put in is a major headache so buying a house with one already is a big adavantage I think.

This is just outside 1604 but Encino Park has nice older homes, tons of trees, and a great community pool/park.

If you want newer homes, like 8 - 10 years (Encino park is more 25+ years old I think) there are some neighborhoods near there - Woods at Encino Park, Terraces at Encino Park - that have a pool. And for newer (under 5 years) neighborhoods there is The Point at Bulverde Village and Cibolo Canyons, both with a community pool (Cibolo has a lazy river even).

Shadow Cliff Swim Club is off Henderson Pass between Brookhollow and Thousand Oaks. You can find it's website and it doesn't seem to indicate any specific neighborhood requirement. Hollywood Park also has a pool. It's a little "town" right between 1604 and 281 (behind the Valero at the Stone Oak exit). The houses are mostly older but tend to be pricey. Houses in Encino are up to about 30 years old to brand new and the older homes share a nice pool/clubhouse area. It is just outside 1604. Farther out in Stone Oak most neighborhoods are newer with a few having houses in the 30 year range. The newer neighborhoods generally have a pool but there is a pool on Knight's Cross that is open to several neighborhoods that don't have a pool. We are considering that one but we already pay for Lifetime so it's not that important.

That is another option if you don't mind paying high monthly dues--Lifetime and Spectrum both have really nice pools. Lifetime has year-round swimming in the indoor pool as well.

Good luck and I hope you find a place you love and a pool that works for you. If you need more info please let everyone know and we'll be happy to help you out

Hidden Forest and Vista Del Norte are a couple I've not seen mentioned. Further inside the loop is Harmony Hills as well.

Here's a listing of pools with summer programs who participate in the Lone Star Summer Swim League (http://www.lsssl.org/Teams%20and%20Pool%20Locations.htm - broken link). Not all are in the area you mentioned, but most are.
