I bought a watch in NYC during a recent business trip. Does anyone have a recommendation on where to get the appraisal done for insurance purposes? It's a Breitling if that helps. I also have a TAG Heuer to be appraised as well. Called Lee Michaels at La Cantera and they said they don't do appraisals.

Go to an authorized dealer, or try Moretti's or Moses Jewelers.

Lee Michaels is an authorized dealer and they said no. I'll look into the others.

Hm... strange. They don't do that free, so what's the problem?
There is a great place in Austin, if you want to go there...
Perhaps your insurance company could provide a recommendation?

And read this (few years old, but maybe still actual)

Watch appraisal cost around $150, so make sure you want to pay that much...

The value of a watch is based on the popularity. Seiko watches used to be more valuable than Rolex in the 70's and early 80's because they were in higher demand. Both Seiko and Rolex are fine watches because they make everything themselves.

Breitling and Tag Heuer are just popular brands right now. But the quality of the case and movement are equivalent to a Fossil. They are all basically designer brands who assemble the parts made from other watchmakers. So the real value is based on it's popularity. You can't judge it by the quality because even fake versions of Breitling and Tag are equivalent in quality to the real thing.

Is this appraisal for insurance purposes?

Most insurance companies have existing policies that cover anything under $5k and $10k, without having to get them anything but a picture and receipt of the timepiece. That's how USAA does it with me.

For more expensive pieces, they can write you a floater for whatever you need.

Yes, it's for insurance purposes. I use Amica for my homeowners and they specifically said I had to send in a copy of the appraisal.
