Schertz OKs incentives to land Amazon warehouse - Houston Chronicle

Yup, it's official- And good news for those of us who dreamed of 'same day' delivery the way cities like San Fransisco and LA have already had for awhile. Also, anything that creates this number of new local jobs is always a good thing in my book.

I read this story awhile back and it made me cringe. I hope, if its completely accurate, the working conditions will be better in Schertz, and hopefully have improved elsewhere.

Mixed blessings. I would prefer to wait longer for my orders from Amazon than having to pay tax. Now that we have no choice bring on the distribution center.

But sales tax on internet purchases from Amazon has been collected for a bit now...

They have collected taxes from Texans as of July 1st of this year. Since Amazon now lost its competitive advantage by having to collect tax now, they are building distribution centers to regain the edge as much as possible by offering quicker delivery. This is the only reason we are getting this center, to compensate.

It doesn't make me cringe. We pay warehouse workers a good wage and benefits, but 50% of applicants fail or refuse to take a drug test, and 50% of the other 50% are terminated shortly after hire for poor attendance. I would not be shocked at all if only 5% of their temporary employees are worthy of the permanent-employee status. It's not all big-company greed, it is a very prevalent and very vexing workforce problem.
