I think putting a residential tower there instead and building the hotel on top of the parking garage or replacing the parking garage with the hotel is a better idea but I'm more than fine with this proposal.

Hows that working out for the Grand Hyatt? or the Condo complex right across 281?

Certainly. Limiting two or three floors to hotel parking wouldn't squeeze mall visitors out. The north end garage barely gets used. That would probably become the preliminary mall garage.

“Right now, we are concerned about the height and the impact to and from Alamo Plaza,” Avellar said. “We think it's overpowering.”

That quote pretty much says it all
You're cherry picking quotes. I could do the same as you and use the quote by another HDRC member saying
"such an addition could set a precedent for future infill in the downtown area."

Bottom line, the HDRC only makes recommendations. They aren't the final say nor do they have approve or disapprove of projects.

Precedent isn't a good thing. If they allow one big ugly building, it clears the way for others to build big ugly buildings, totally ruining the feel of that part of the city

Those are condos. I said residential building, which isn't limited to condos. Apartment developments in the urban core are selling out. They're demand is great and a high-rise apartment complex in downtown would be a big hit.

As for the Vidorra, it's at nearly 70% occupied. Not bad.

Like the Grand Hyatt or the plethora of crappy stucco hotels on the eastern edge of downtown that grace drivers on 37. Those buildings are 100x uglier and offensive to the eye than this building. This building is a freaking Picasso in comparison to those pieces of dung.

This buildings not "limestone and stucco" design does set a very good precedent design wise. But that quote wasn't about design.

Then why post what you did when it seems obvious that you know what a facade is?
