There have been a ton of previous threads on water softeners here, just do a search for 'water softeners'. I got mine at qualitywaterassociates.com and then had a plumber install it. It was $800 for the softener (make sure it's the right size for your home and the number of occupants) and $200 to install. There are several other City Forum people who have done the same. Last time I was at Costco I noticed they were selling a water softener there too for around $800.

We paid, I think, maybe $700 to $800 for the whole thing, including installation with the extra filters. We have to add salt and change the filters but otherwise it has been great for over 3 years. We are also in the North 281 area.
We also purchased ours at Lowes (in June) and paid less than $700 including installation. Lowe's was excellent with the customer service/installation and we have absolutely zero complaints. We've added 2 bags of salt (actually wasn't even down to the level where it needed it, but we were at Lowe's and picked them up) since then. We lived in our house for a few days before the softener was installed and I could tell immediately in the shower when the soft water had made it through the water heater. Big difference (good)!!
