It would also help if drivers actually paid attention to them.

The number of people that run the red light right near our school crossing, with a crossing guard right there, is insane. Calling the police does zilch.

Which department are you calling? The school district's or SAPD? If there are complaints, they will post a patrol vehicle at that location to help "remind" people to obey the law. It happens all the time (many times there are threads on "speed traps" it is due to increased enforcement as a result of citizen complaints) and there is no reason the local department won't do the same at that red light...

SAPD. The dispatcher TOLD me "there's nothing we can do."

Many many calls later, by many people, begging for a police presence there, they did send someone out for a couple of days. Then it's back to the same old stuff. The REALLY stupid thing is that there is another crosswalk (w/o a light) further up the road. So on school mornings, traffic is ALWAYS backed up around that crosswalk (with a crossing guard). So the cars that speed through the light have to stop again within 50 feet. We're extremely careful and the crossing guards are excellent, but idiot drivers are too plentiful. The other crossing gets ignored entirely. Fortunately that crossing guard doesn't hesitate to tell off idiot drivers....

I wonder if you could get the district to help you, Chaka. I know Northside's police are great about things like that, we've already had one talk to us about the new sidewalk and (hopefully) crossing at our HOA meeting.

Call your substation (listed on the the SAPD website) and talk to the SAFFE (San Antonio Fear Free Environment) Unit. SAFFE units are officers focused on identifying, evaluating and resolving community crime problems with the cooperation and participation of community residents. They should help resolve the issue.

If anyone ever gives you that BS again ("there's nothing we can do"), call the Chief's office at (210) 207-7360 and complain.
