My husband and I are looking to move from St. Louis area (on the Illinois side of the river), to the San Antonio area. We moved here from Arizona and are used to the heat, and grew up in central California where it can get pretty hot so I am not worried about that. I hate the weather where we currently live, I do not handle tornado threats well. Do those happen in San Antonio often? How is the job market, my husband is a jack of all trades and I currently work in education but am switching over to work in youth ministry. Also I am curious about the average cost for an apartment or preferably a small home. We have two dogs and would need a small outdoor area for them. Thanks!

Tornado warnings are very rare, maybe one or two a year if that. The strongest recorded tornado to hit San Antonio was an F2 which occurred when a Hurricane hit the Texas coast and its outer bands went through San Antonio and caused a few small short burst tornadoes to develop including an F2. The last tornado I can remember hitting San Antonio was in 2008 and it was a weak F1. It wasn't on the ground very long and there was some wind damage but nothing too crazy.

I agree with the post above -- Tornando warnings/Tornadoes are very rare. San Antonio has relatively few natural disaster issues.

I have mixed feelings toward the job market in San Antonio. Id encourage you to read San Antonio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , as it outlines the major industries/companies in San Antonio. My sister-in-law is in education (Elementary), and had very little difficulty finding a job. She began at a private school and then moved into the public education system. She likes it a lot.

Realtor here. The cost of housing here in San Antonio is quite cheap compared to other markets. It all depends on what you are looking for. Do you want to be in Central San Antonio where everything is happening? Or, would you be OK living a little further out where you can get a nicer house for cheaper? Do you need to be zoned to good schools? OK with a fixer-upper where you might be able to make a little $$$? There are many preferences to consider!

Agree with everything said above and feel like San Antonio has one of the strongest job markets in the country. You will be floored from the amount of house you can get for the money. I live in DC now, and just bought a house for $440k. Here that's just north of 2000 sq. ft., and a 30 mile commute into the city. There that's a mansion with a pool and several acres of property. Enjoy!

The SA-Austin corridor is still a nice place to live and jobs are plentiful for those who want to work. I prefer the Schertz, Cibolo, New Braunfels area or at least outside Loop 1604 on the Northside. Further West on 1604 get way more expensive and traffic is a nightmare. Austin traffic is a nightmare 24/7.

In regards to switching over to youth ministry, various churches have schools.Conerstone the big mega church out on Stoine Oak has a school, plus there is also the Archdiocese of San Antonio which has schools of course. Some are still staffed by nuns, others have all lay people.
We rarely get tornado watches or warnings here, just once in awhile. As a teacher even if you applied to one of the public school districts you should be able to find a job. What exactly does your husband do? He might even get a job working for the same school district as you as a maintance man or warehouse worker if they are hiring. Most school districts have websites which list employement.
You might check on trulia.com or zillow.com and type in San Antonio or say Universal City,Converse, Kirby,Schertz and New Braunfels area. I live in Guadalupe County, but my school taxes are high,(Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD) but the city and county taxes are lower than Bexar County where San Antonio is located.
Out here in Schertz we have a new library,YMCA and several parks.Universal City has a dog park.
You would have to drive into San Antonio which isn't far, only about 20 miles. There are several dog parks in San Antonio.
You aren't too far from various state parks, and if you have grandkids, you can take them to Seaworld or Six Flags Fiesta Texas or the water parks Splashtown and Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels.
There are various businesses and manufacturers around here also where your husband could find work.

Default Flash Floods,

A tornado is a rare occurrenc here, but flash floding can be common. Do not try to ford low
water crossings during heavy rains.

We moved from STL to Dallas to San Antonio and it takes an adjustment but IMHO is worth it. IT is a good laid back family town. We like Leon Springs and the i10 area into Boerne Tx more than the i35 side of SA. It isn't bad and there are some good things over there - we like Greune Tx and Canyon lake - just our preference.

The job market is decent and way better than STL.

The weather is better too. No earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanoes (well, some in N Mexico) or hurricanes. oh and milder winters.

Crime in STL - Murder rates are high there, here theft is high.

Lots of ministry opportunities.

If you get more specific about how much per month you want to pay and exact church denominations you are looking for I can also be more specific.

Cheers.
