Working for USAA...? (San Antonio, Post, Anton: insurance, employment, wages)

Can anyone provide any experienced based feedback on working for USAA? My husband and I are considering relocating to the San Antonio area to be closer to family. He's a prior Marine and someone had suggested he look into employment with USAA. I wasn't sure how the pay was or the atmosphere as a whole. Any suggestions would be appreciated! He's currently working for the Fed. gov but really wants to do something related to military...Thought SA would be the perfect fit for him! He misses that ...

Have you checked Glassdoor.com? It's a good website to get some reviews on a company if you haven't checked out that site already.

I had a good friend who just suddenly passed away who worked for USAA and he loved it. He'd been with them for twenty plus years. I can't speak to their present hiring situation so no advice there. Personally, as a retired Army Federal civil service person, I'd recommend trying to catch on with the military here. Kind of goes up and down in terms of hiring and might be a little down right now as they work through the potential budget crisis but working for the government here is good, especially in terms of offering slightly higher salaries than many local businesses/companies.

My boyfriend was in the Army and Army National Guard. Stayed up in WA for 16 years before he came back to San Antonio. He got in with USAA about two years after he did. At first it was going alright, but after about a year into USAA, he experienced too much micro-management and saw managers he worked for change every so often. He had about 4 or 5 managers in a 3 year span. He worked as a Member Services Rep I which is where you would start if you worked in the Insurance part. There is also finance, and banking. Depending on what experience your husband has, he could try for any department I imagine, if they are hiring. After three years, my b/f became very stressed out but I feel he wasn't meant for a call center environment, as I am not either. If your husband is comfortable in that type of environment, more power to him. Pay starts according to experience but as you stay, from what I understood, the pay is pretty good, but you WILL work for it. It's not for everyone but it certainly doesn't hurt to try. Good Luck!

Thanks everyone for the feedback. No, I don't think he's the call center environment type. A friend of his had suggested trying for security of some type because he's a muscular guy that SCREAMS Marine. lol I'm not sure if USAA has that type of stuff or if this friend was just making suggestions because of his War Vet. status.
Anyway, guess we'll see!

Occasionally, USAA posts openings for physical security specialists (fancy term for security guards). I heard they are actually paid well, but that's in relation to the typically low wages in the security industry.

Honestly, I have 4 friends that have worked for USAA....2 of them TOTALLY DEVOTED and LOVED it....two that found it a nightmare and moved on....interestingly enough almost the exact same timeframe, but different positions.

Like with ANY job, give it a try. They are doing SOMETHING right, and have earned our business for the past umteen....having said that I have a neighbor (prior enlisted by wayyyyyy retired) that will NOT use them because they use to exclude enlisted for Officers only business.....

Thanks everyone. A few people have DM me and asked why my husband doesn't do something with the mil military. He would LOVE to....but getting a civilian military job is hard
At least here. If anyone has any tips on how to get "in"...he's an 8 yr prior marine war vet. He misses being with like minded military folks

USAJOBS.GOV to look for listings here and all around the world...you can have his paperwork ready for Vet preferences for hiring, and if he is 30% or greater disabled, have that letter from the VA handy and ready for processing.
