Can anyone share their experiences or knowledge on relocating pets during moves? We'll be in San Antonio by mid/late January, God willing and want to bring our birds with us (African Grey and an Indian Ringneck)

Boy, are you in luck!!!!! I just moved from Palm Desert, California to San Antonio, Texas and I brought my birds with me. I have a Sun Conure, a Blue Crown Conure, a Cockatiel and a Sulphur Crested Cockatoo. It took two days to get here and we came out here in my dad's Chevy Tahoe so we would have more room for the birds and just everyone in general. We kept the birds in the very back part of the vehicle and my son had the back seat. The birds were in their travel cages and they were extremely well behaved.

We took them out of their cages for periods of time and let them hang out on our shoulders. We had a bunch of "bird towels" to put over ourselves so that they wouldn't cr@p on us. We had the windows locked so nobody would accidentally open a window and when we needed to stop for bathroom or food breaks or to get gas, we put everybody back in their travel cages. I made sure we had plenty of food and bottled water so they would have that and I gave them treats too. I had towels to cover the cages at night so they would feel safe in their cages, even though it was dark out at night. We stayed at pet-friedndly hotels. I have AAA Tour Books and they list which hotels are pet-friendly. There is usually a small extra charge for keeping a pet, but it's worth it for your peace of mind. You never want to leave your pets in the car. The birds were actually quiet in the hotel(s) too. But I had to either have them all on me or I had to cover the travel cages to keep them quiet. Overall, I would say they made great travel companions.

I don't know where you are coming from or where you will be going but the Drury Inn is pet-friendly. Our first night we stayed in El Paso at a place that was okay (I forget what it was called) and it sufficed, but it was pretty old-school. When we actually got to San Antonio the next day we stayed at the Drury and since we had to wait about a week for the moving van to arrive with our stuff, we stayed at the Drury for a week. My only caution is that if you have prescription meds you may want to take them with you when you leave your room, or leave them in a locked suitcase. My dad, who is disabled needs painkillers to even be able to walk. He had his prescription filled before we left CA so that he would have enough pills to last him for the 3 or 4 weeks he was going to stay in TX with me. One day, while staying at the Drury he noticed that about 60 of his pills were missing. He filed a complaint with the manager because obviously whoever had access to his room took the pills. They denied that it was any of their people and refused to take responsibility. It was another whole ordeal to get a new prescription from CA fed exed to him and to have a CA scrip filled in TX. So, I would recommend the Drury because it is nice and clean and they are pet-friendly, but just be sure you lock up your stuff.

Thanks Twinkletoes. I see you're a bird head too!

I need to fly my birds down since we don't plan on driving! Hawkeye (the CAG) gets car sick, so the poor guy won't do too well on a long drive (from NYC). We're paying movers so driving isn't even an option at this point... unless flying is out of the question.

We have a cinnamin whiteface cockatiel, but she can't come with us. I'm sad about that.

Have you run into any good avian vets?

Thanks for tips!!

Go to the vet and get some tranqlizers for them. My cat has traveled from SA to Omaha to Cinci back to here and she can not stand being in the car! The dogs did ok the cat meowed the whole way (that loud annoying meow not the soft sweet one)

Latino, there's also a vet/animal hospital behind the HEB at Boerne Stage Road in Leon Springs. I think it is called Leon Springs Animal Hospital. They sent me some info on their practice, which I have saved in a drawer in the kitchen in case I ever need it.

Default Found birds - look like conures

Anyone know of anyone missing some green conures - lost on the northside? There are some exotic birds that look like small parrots or conures (they're definitely pet birds) that have made home in a tree close to my neighborhood. There's at least 2 of them I can see for sure. They seem to be content and have not left but I cannot get anyone to help me rescue them (I've called all the bird and wildlife rescues).
