So, on the surface, San Antonio seems like it could be a good fit for our family, and my husband and I are ready to start doing some serious research before we start looking into transfer positions, selling our home, etc.

I was hoping that you could help me out by giving me some research starting points. We would be looking to rent a 2 bedroom apartment for around $1,300 per month, for 6-12 months while we house hunt. When we're ready to buy, we would want a newer, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home for around $200,000. My husband would work on the NW loop (no idea what that even means), so we would want to be no more than 20 minutes from there, if that is realistic. My 3 year old is autistic, so we would need some kind of therapy services for him, and I'm interested in homeschooling in the future. Also, we're currently pretty rural, and while I like the personal space, I would want to live closer to stores and things to do. We have an acre of land, and I find it to be a little much to keep up with.

Anyway, if anyone could give me some starting points to look into regarding these things, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Your budget looks good. You should be able to find what you're looking for on the NW side of town. The 'loop' can refer to either 410 or 1604. 410 is the inner loop that circles the city and 1604 is the outer loop.

San Antonio has a great homeschooling community. Both my wife and I were homeschooled in the area and there is long history and large number of families that homeschool here. It's one of the few places I know of that have competitive sport programs for homeschoolers (we compete against private schools) and there are numerous co-ops/groups in different locations around town.
