Recently, our current landlords have put our house up for sale. We found a house to rent nearby and were told it was in the same school district my child has been enrolled in. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The new house is located in the SWISD which is not a very good school district in my opinion. Is there any school districts in the San Antonio area that accept out of district students? Medina Valley ISD does but won't know for sure if a spot is available until school starts. Thank you!

SAISD will accept outside district students for certain schools such as the Young Women's Leadership Academy (6-12), and for Bonham and Hawthorne Academies (K-8). Coincidentally, I (and many others) consider these to be the best schools in SAISD... which also means that there is often a lottery for entrance.

I'm not arguing that they are better than AHISD, but SAISD also does not charge outside tuition.

I'm assuming you were in NISD previously. Were you looking at elementary, middle, or high school?

Personally, I'd pay the tuition and do AHISD. It's worth it.

As mentioned on the link provided by Need4Speed2012, depending on what elementary school you are zoned for in Southwest ISD, you may be able to claim the state's Public Education Grant which enables you to transfer to a different district.

See PEG: Frequently Asked Questions for more info. The SWISD elementary schools which are on the PEG list (meaning you can leave the district) are the following: Hidden Cove Elem, Southwest Elem, and Spicewood Park Elem. If you live in their attendance zones, I would check it out. NISD doesn't HAVE to take your child, but if they attended the school previously (and considering the state gives them a 10% funding bonus for each kid from a PEG school), you might have a good shot getting in.

Good luck.

We had trouble with a NISD elementary school in the area that you're talking about and as I talked to lots of other parents in the area, people seemed pretty satisfied with the SWISD schools, especially the middle school. The reason the NISD schools have a higher score on Great Schools is that they really focus on teaching to the STAAR test. Lower test scores do not necessarily mean that a school is bad.

We ended up switching to online public school...not an option that appeals to everyone, but something that has worked out well for my kids.
