Can anyone recommend some solid steak houses in San Antonio that won't break the bank? Wife and I want to eat at one for our anniversary but we don't want a $200+ tab either.

Thanks,

The chains would suffice - Longhorn, Saltgrass, Texas Roadhouse, Outback - but they will be chain food.

Hungry Farmer at IH 35S and Loop 13 on the southside is locally owned and they grow their own meat. It's not expensive but it's also not ironed napkins and china plates. You also have the Little Red Barn on Hackberry at IH 10 just south of downtown. The seating are picnic tables and the waitresses wear short cowgirl skirts and cap pistols with cowgirl hat. Not expensive. I'm partial to the Hungry Farmer for a steak but I like mine medium rare which a lot of folks can't get around. I always order grilled onions and tell 'em to turn them almost black-yum! Otherwise, if it's a sepcial occasion, consider Hermann Sons at Hondo Texas. It's on the left as you get to Hondo. Ask to be seated at the windows. You'll love the country experience and the food is also great.

Little Red Barn Steakhouse | American Steakhouse | San Antonio Tradition since 1963!

I definitely recommend Hermann Sons Steakhouse. For anyone looking to experience a real Texas steakhouse, this is the place. Family owned, really good food at fair prices. Might be a bit of a drive depending on where you're coming from, but enjoy the ride and the view.

We have eaten at Little Red Barn, Hermann Sons, Outback, Longhorn, Saltgrass. Of all of those, Outback is still our favorite.

Thanks for the heads up, been by there plenty of times and always wondered. I was afraid it was more akin to Sammy's in Castroville which was...less than good.

Morton's usually has an unadvertised special. It is not on the menu. Call and ask about it to confirm. It is a steak & seafood meal for one. It includes a salad, filet mignon with seafood (crab cake or scallops) and a full side and a dessert. The cost is normally $69 per person. The server will not tell you about it unless you ask about it first.

Sign up to be on their email distribution and you will get notified when they have deals going on. July 4th you could have got a meal for $39. Guess they figured it was going to be a slow night due to family BBQs.

I grew up eating at Herman Sons every week when I lived near Hondo and also ate at Sammy's once a month during the same time.

Sammy's is not as good at Herman Sons, it is not even a steak house. More like a mom and pop version of Jim's.

However, the best steak house of them all (in Medina County) out that way will require a little bit more of a drive to D'hanis. Bill and Rosa's Steakhouse. Prices are fair and the food is better there than Herman Sons (but they are both really good!).
