so, I've planned an 8' x 12' shed for my back yard. Pricing the lumber at Lowes it looks like i'm going to be out about $420 for the wood and another couple hundred for cinder block base, windows, nails, roofing, paint, etc...

I'm just wondering if anyone has any less known retailers that have good prices on dimensional and sheet lumber. I know that $420 isn't really too expensive, but Lowes just can't be the best price in town. thanx

I don't know if there is such a thing as "cheap" lumber
But I would say that MG is cheaper than Lowes or Home Depot.
We always get our lumber from a local lumber yard in Bandera. It is Hevenor's Lumber, phone number is 830-796-3709, located on Hwy 16 just before you get into the town of Bandera. They are ALWAYS cheaper and they have MUCH better lumber than the big guys. They only sell #1. I know it is probably a good drive for you but if you could save $75/$100 it might be worth the drive. The customer service is unbeatable too, you won't have to load your own truck like you have to do at those other places. It won't hurt to give 'em a call.
There is also Dodson house moving. I don't know if they still do it, but we have bought decks from them for hardly nothing. They are about 15x10 decks, built out of 2x6's, for $10 each. They were decks taken off of portable buildings from NISD and they have the non-skid stuff on them. It is a lot of work to haul and unload but it saved us a whole lot of money. Luckily we have the trailer and tractor to haul/unload.

After your research please post up and let us know who you find to be the cheapest. We always have projects going on, and are always looking for a deal.
Thanks~

thanx for the tip. I'll check out Hevenor's since I live just a bit south of hwy 16 and 1604. Sounds like a good excuse to take the bike out for a ride and maybe hit 337 out to leakey.

ohhhh, 337, what a beautiful ride. I don't have a bike, but we get together with our Jeeps and go "cruisin" that way, very, very nice.
BTW, how you gonna get all that lumber on your bike?

Have you tried McCoys ? They are like Lowes and HD except for more countryish and God Bless them they are closed on Sunday. I'll do business with any company that closes it's doors on Sunday. It shows me money is not the most important thing.

I'll check mcCoys. there is one just inside 410 on bandera so it's pretty convenient for me. I'll get back with y'all after I check everyone's prices, I have to finish putting together the monstrosity of a swingset that my wife made me buy at Sam's before I can start on the shed.

Malone, I know you've seen the pictures of the little chinese guys on bikes with crazy loads. I think my gixxer can handle it

When I was building my deck - MG was WAY cheaper than anyone else.

When I got to the end and needed some more because I didn't calculate right - I took my reciept to lowes and asked them to match it. They tried but said they couldn't go that low because it was less than they (lowe's) paid for it. They cam down a lot to help me out, but were still a bit higher per board than MG.

I think MG even delivered it to my house for free.

checked McCoy's today. price wasn't significantly higher than Lowe's, but everything I looked at was about 5-6% higher.

I rebuilt part of my deck last spring. I think mccoys was more expensive than lowes, but they had better lumber than lowes. Lowes top choice lumber is not the best.
