I cannot afford health insurance and am not entitled to Medicare/Medicaid... I really need counseling for severe depression and anxiety and wondered if any of you knew where I could go for either free, or very inexpensive, counseling?
I do understand that alot of churches/ministers off this service, but it's a professional service I really need and I am not a church-goer at all.
Someone once told me about the University hospital, but I cannot find any information other than services available to registered students.
Help, anyone?

Well, there is very little free or inexpensive medical care for the uninsured in the U.S. I guess most people know that, with what is going on in Congress now. You could check into Carelink, which is something offered by the University Hospital system. I have no personal experience with it, as I don't even live in Bexar County.

I had a friend who went to the UTHSC for counseling. They did income based and it was only $10/visit. I don't remember if they gave discounts on the prescriptions or not. I can't find the information, but I'm sure if you called this main number they could get you to the right department. 210-567-7000

Centro Med has mental health services. Dr. Stenger is a great psychiatrist that can prescribe meds and they are numerous counselors on staff for therapy.

Best of luck; I know how difficult it is to deal with mental health issues from first hand experience.

You can contact NAMI- National Alliance on Mental Illness at nami-sat.org. San Antonio Office phone number (210) 734-3349.
I have depression & anxiety that went untreated from Dec. 2015-Sept. 19, 2016. I finally got depression meds, anxiety meds & medicine to sleep thru the night from my primary care physician. Either no one accepted my medicare insurance or they didn't have an opening til sometime in December. My mom had depression & anxiety. My brother had undiagnosed borderline personality disorder. My Ex- husband was Bipolar. I also had 2 friends that were bipolar. I just found out a close friend is having a mental health issue in their family. I hope this information helps. I've also heard about the San Antonio Clubhouse. I think they've been around for a while now. I would google San Antonio Clubhouse & it should bring up contact info & a website.
