This officer was a detective with SVU as I understand it. Why was he in uniform working traffic? Is that something that every office has to do every so often?

Maybe I have watched too much tv but I thought once you were a detective you were in plain clothes for the rest of you life.
He was working his day off to fill in that position due to a manpower shortage.

Sad really, all the way around.

While I wouldn't say he's completely innocent or anything (heck I personally worked with Det. Marconi at one point) I am going to point to the environment that the suspect grew up in. The East side is its own island of mess and there seems to be little if anything that has worked to assist its community and its residents. They have a great grant program within Wheatley to create a community school and have ECI and Early Head start programs and parenting classes, job training, etc etc etc....but its slow moving. Don't let your 78202 kids grow up to be murders.

That's a slap in the face to the people who have managed to grow up in that environment and have somehow managed not to ambush a cop. There's no excuse.

It's a piece of his history. I didn't excuse his actions. I'm just mentioning it as a possible risk factor. I am well aware of many successful people from that area of the city.

You said he's not "completely innocent" and pointed to the environment he grew up in.

He's "completely guilty" just like the rich kids who kill their parents. It's a heart and mind issue, not a "where I slept as a child" issue.

Okay. Whatever. I should have said I felt as though the system failed him. With all those supports and this still happened. We agree to disagree. We have before.

You can throw all the support programs to them you want, but until they use those programs and apply themselves....you're not going to see any improvements. Attitudes have to be changed 1st. The system didn't fail him. He failed.
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
