We're still looking at a relocation and retirement in Texas in the near future, now living in Michigan. We love the traditional 'Hill County' style architecture homes and a rolling hills location to match around San Antonio. Stone building details (including the fireplace) with high ceilings featuring exposed beams, that's the look. Our needs call for a 2 acre or more lot, and a quality home with a in-ground pool and a outdoor seating area (summer kitchen). Budget would be in the $500k - $800k area. Which neighborhoods should be on the list? What concerns should we have with these neighborhoods? Any info would be appreciated.

We plan on staying in a San Antonio rental this August for a couple of weeks to sample the heat (!), so we can look over areas at that time.

Steve

I’d look out near Helotes and on Babcock outside 1604.

I'd also look out on 46, going west out of New Braunfels.

You may also want to look at Fair Oaks Ranch, Scenic Oaks, and other developments off of I-10W between San Antonio and Boerne.

I love North and NW San Antonio for the Hill Country feel.

Boerne, Mico, New Braunfels, Canyon Lake are pretty awesome.

Let me know if i can help.

Don't bother with the test, if you've never been exposed to mountain cedar.

My allergist in SA told me that allergy tests won't show an allergy to pollen that someone has never been exposed to before. He said that many of his patients don't have an allergic reaction to mountain cedar until they've lived in SA for 2-3 years.

Yes, this. My allergy to mountain cedar only showed up 3 years after I moved to SA.

UPDATE - we ended up buying in New Braunfels, in the River Chase community. Beautiful area, seems to be a easy commute to SA and a little longer to the Austin area. Our move from Michigan will be gradual over the next 12 months.

Great choice. Plus you will be close to Gruene which has a lot of shops, places to eat and Gruene Hall. Also, in the Summer you can go tubing down the river. Canyon Lake is also nearby if you are into fishing and/or boating.
