I grew up in the great North West, hunted my intire youth. that was a while ago, I've been in the Army for the last 25 years. The places we were stationed either didn't have hunting available or poor hunting. I now live and will retire in the great state of Texas, (San Antonio) and would love to get back into hunting. The biggest hurdle I've had is finding lans to hunt on. I've made friends with some land owners put the farel hogs seldom come to thier lands. They don't have much water on thier lands.
I have 2 friends who want to do the dame thing as I do, get back into hunting. we are very polite, trust worthy and respectful of other peoples lands and crops ect... We do'nt want to offer money to hunt, but will if the price is reasonable. We will how ever share the meat of the hogs.
If any one can help us contact me at daveg3056@hotmail.com your help would be very appreciated.

Dave....good luck. I hope you meet up with someone. You might want to visit Bandera or Pleasanton other smaller towns and just talk to some of the locals. I lot of ranchers do offer weekends etc for hunters, but generally for a fee. It's not always inexpensive for a little hunting shack for shelter. I've been told that some will trade for services or whatever, so be prepared to be creative....clear some brush, or mend some barbed wire. It's expensive to maintain a ranch, plus the liability costs. OTH...getting rid of feral hogs might be incentive enough....but you might have to hunt several dozen! j/k of course!

How about fighting the Boar mano-a-mano? That would be pretty entertaining to watch

A coworker says there are a lot of feral hogs on the land around Castroville. Maybe ask around there?

Yep we had feral hogs around Hondo and D'Hanis. Had leases out there in late 60's and 70's. Lots more Javelina though. You'd be really lucky to ever see a feral hog around these parts. Plenty of Axis deer along with whitetail in the hill country though. Comfort..Centerpoint even this side (SA)of Boerne for Axis deer. Might look up a Nye family in D'Hanis!

I had a friend who did just that. He'd use the dogs only to find the hog and once found, he'd get out his knife and get close enough to slit the hogs throat. Since the hog had tusks, a knife only seemed fair......Of course, he had a .45 on his hip if things got out of hand...And we all thought he was crazy....

Well , my BIL tells me feral hogs are plentiful now. He says ranchers might pay hunters to reduce there numbers.

In Helotes, they come into people's yard during the night and make a mess. You don't have to go very far. There are plenty of hogs in Hondo still, and Bandera, Castroville, probably the Boerne area. Visit a gun show; you'll meet lots of people there who have land and might be able to help you out.

You probably won't have much luck on ranches who have their land already leased to hunters until after the regular season. Try the feed stores in rural areas around Feb 1.
