Hi, we are moving to San Antonio in the next few months and are curious about the Windcrest area. The realtors try to steer us away from it, but the neighborhoods look nice and you can get a lot of house for the money. I have seen reports of gang activity in the area ... are things getting better or worse with the economic climate as it is? fill me in!

Personally, I'd avoid Windcrest. SOME areas are okay, some are nice - but it's surrounded by blight IMO.

I would not live there. Although it may be nice, bad areas are adjacent to it, and will eventually be in Windcrest.

Homes with burglar bars on the windows always makes me pause . . . .

Burglary happens anywhere here, even in gated communities.

I would stay away from windcrest too.

Yeah, it DOES happen anywhere. I just try to avoid the areas where it's become an art form.

I would say go for windcrest. The perception is negative but the reality is that crime is low in windcrest it's self. Windcrest elementary is a great school it is NEISD. It probably one of the few cities that's seen a large increase of it's tax base in the last year. They landed rackspace a large tech company. I think most of the above posters are think of the area of 10-15 years ago.

Actually, we looked at the area 6 years ago, and my sister is an active RE agent. Had a friend looking that went into the area. You're right - WC itself IS pretty nice by and large, but it's surrounded by an area most generously described as "blighted". But, to each their own...

Didn't it get worse after Katrina? I don't know I wasn't here until 2008.

Windcrest has attracted a lot of businesses to the surrounding areas, but it did get worse from my experience driving the VIA bus out of Randolph Park and Ride. I would not recommend Roosevelt High School unless your child is going to DATA (if it's still there).
