Relocating to SA Many Questions
My husband and I are coming down from the Seattle Area in October to check out SA as a place to relocate. (We love hot weather!) I have lots of questions about neighborhoods, jobs, etc.
We are active early 60s. He is a retired skilled builder/carpenter who loves to keep busy doing projects for neighbors.
I am the program and volunteer director for a beautiful arboretum.
We would like to buy a small home (3 br, 2ba) that needs some fixing up. We have been looking at Monte Vista, Olmos Park, Terrill Hills.
I'm a city girl, he would like at least 1/2 acre.
NO cookie cutter subdivisions, no covenants against having a small workshop in the garage. We are big gardeners and would like to grow flowers and veggies.
Looking for a mid-to-upscale, diverse community.
What are the chances of my finding work (at my advanced age ) at a non-profit, museum, arboretum, etc.?
How safe are some of the up-and coming areas like Alta Vista?
We plan to hook up with a realtor for a day while we are there -- any suggestions? Also any suggestions on architects who are savvy to renovation?
Thanks for all ideas and help. SA looks like a beautiful city.

I would recommend that you read the sticky at the top of the SA page, by new2sa. It'll help answer a lot of questions that you may have. 1/2 acre maybe a little tough to find in the older areas...but not impossible.

Ryne,
Your link isn't working. Can you link to a closed thread?

Moderator cut: url removed They are very familiar now only with King William but with many of the older, historic, currently being revitalized neighborhoods. There are a few others I've heard about, but am forgetting names at the moment. I'd make an effort to connect with realtors who really know these areas. Many realtors will get excited about the prospect, but don't really know much about these older neighborhoods, and many will steer you away from places like Alta Vista.
Alta Vista is a great area, it's taking some time to really come back up to the level of Monte Vista, but it's got a lot of promise. I don't think any of these inner city historic neighborhoods are unsafe - we live in Lavaca, which has approached higher end, but still with some deals to be had and still mixed. Wonderful place to live, and work on a fixer upper. Most have excellent larger lots, despite being so close to downtown.
I do know an architect to recommend....I'll DM you more info when I get it.
As for a job - we do have a lot of non-profit type places: many many museums, state and national historic sites, botanic gardens, etc. I'm not sure how easy it is to get a paid job there though.

yes, go advanced, highlight the word you want to act as a link and press that globe looking button with what looks like a paperclip in front of it. Then enter the URL in the window that pops up.
here's one for Engadget
