You needn't take the 'singular' (i.e. one) major tech employer out. Leave them in. Comparatively, S.A. has less tech jobs and that is a known fact to anyone that works in I.T. and probably to many that do not. Austin is freakin' 'Silicone Hills'. You needn't get defensive. Not ever city is everything, even your beloved city that you hold at the top of every category, as nonsensical as it may seem.

Whoooooooshhhhh! Do you have a sweet spot for me ryneone? I keep tripping over you in threads.

The article tells the readers why numerous times. Higher Salaries, that are a result of the Oil & Gas boom.

Here is also a link to a chart comparing XOM (exxon dallas) COP (conco-phillips houston) to the S&P500 index (America as a whole).
XOM - Exxon Mobil Corporation - Google Finance

Stock prices do tend to determine whether an industry is hiring new-graduates or not.

It's a lack of amenities that is to blame. Both Houston and Dallas have NFL and MLB teams. In addition Dallas even has an NHL team in town. Where do you think business people like to take their respective clients for entertainment purposes? To an NFL football game or ML baseball game possibly? Of course! It's attractions like these that make up a high quality of life in a city and makes these cities attractive to corporations and their employees. And Austin has big time D1A college sports at the University of Texas so the same principle applies.

You could say the same about Austin if you took Dell out of the picture. You can't though, it's asinine to even make the statement.

As a soon to be recent college grad, I can't wait to move back to San Antonio from Dallas. A lot of my friends who are graduating or about to in the next year feel the same way. We see lots of potential in San Antonio. Losing AT&T is hard, but we certainly can grow Rackspace, at least they had the gumption to tell the city leader that they were being wooed by other cities and allowed San Antonio/ Windcrest to make their case.

AT&T's decision was cowardly. To have San Antonio city leaders in the office of the CEO two days before the decision and say nothing, is sickening. In the same way that the Japanese ambassador Nomura was meeting with Secretary of state Cordell Hull during the bombing of Pearl Harbor was sickening.

AT&T and Dallas leaders have been talking for over a year on the move actually.

And I hope you and your friends change San Antonio (or try). Some college graduates that are moving back! Finally .

By the way, Rackspace is no AT&T. I personally feel AT&T got "too big" for San Antonio. I mean seriously, the airport needs to have more direct flights. Austin is kicking San Antonio's butt in that category, and is becoming a focus city for JetBlue.

firstly, these lists certainly aren't the holy grail of all economic and social knowledge. as an example of disparity between various lists, careerbuilder came up with a list with a very similar title (Best Cities to Live for College Grads) and completely different results (Jobs & Internships for College Students on CBcampus.com - View Blog). i'm sure i could come up with my own list that would be statistically correct and would show sa in the number one spot.

secondly, your forbes list only gives the top ten cities and doesn't breakdown by the various factors (as far as i can tell). who knows--perhaps sa was number 11?

thirdly, to use your logic, could you explain to me (and forbes) why job searchers overall don't choose dallas, and instead chose salt lake city, wichita, and austin first (Best Cities For Jobs In 2008 - Forbes.com

i guess my point is this: making sweeping conclusions based on top 10 lists probably isn't great for your credibility.

I still contend however that it is the lack of big time pro sports teams that is partly to blame both for the departure of AT&T's HQ and the city's inability to attract other major corporations to the area. The thing is though it is kind of a catch 22 situation. You can't have MLB or an NFL team unless you have a very strong corporate base but, you cannot build a strong corporate base without having the pro franchises in town to attract the companies. I think San Antonio is headed in the right direction anyway though. I see both MLB, the NFL and big time college NCAA D1A football flourishing here by 2018.

Umm... no you couldn't, but good try. If you took Dell out, you'd still have approx 95-100 more tech companies that S.A. does not. But being a 'soon to be recent college grad', you probably already knew that . I have friends that are in tech; merely H.S. graduates mind you, but making ~100k at Rackspace and they already knew that. Wait... you didn't already know that?! Must be the kool-aid in the OT thread.

Why must everyone here always take things so personal? I swear, tomorrow someone will say that S.A. has no ocean front property (or equally common knowledge) and somebody will argue that to not be the case.

The rest of what you said is moot in the context of my statements.

If you took Dell out of Austin all you would have is a city full of pot smoking hippies playing hacky sack in Zilker Park. No Dellionaires, no Dell Diamond, no former Intel shell in Downtown. Austin didn't even have any formal gala events before Dell went big.
