Check engine light just came on in our '97 Honda Civic. Can anyone recommend a good mechanic in or near the downtown area. Thank you!

are you limited to downtown? you willing to drive for quality work at a fair price?

give honda mike a call at 210-889-4117. tell him robert with the black volvo sent you.

he's been working on my cars for well over 5 years and always gets it right the first time. doesnt lollygag with bs repairs or half-assed work, he does it right the first time.

he will also tell you things you probably dont want to hear, as in if you have other issues, he will point them out and give you an idea on how long its been that way and how much longer it will last. he wont pressure you to do the repairs but he will stress that you should get it done before it gets worse.

also, you should go to any parts store since your car is ODB II and have them pull the codes then report those codes back here. if its something simple, i could help you replace it. before becoming strictly a volvo guy, i was a honda guy, owning pretty much every honda thats out there sans a mini van or NSX

Bill Montemayor at Eliseo's Garage (Zarzamora and Leal). It's about a mile west of downtown, but he is reasonable in price and will not over diagnose a problem.

We took it to a place recommended in other posts on this forum...It turned out to be that we needed a new idol air control valve. The garage we went to is quoting us about $600 for part and labor. The part online is only about $198 or so. Is this something a mechanic friend could change easily or do you think we should cough up the $600? Thanks!

Arrowwood at 281 and Bitters-they only do Hondas and Acuras and are honest and fast.

I can highly recommend Homann Tire & Automotive at 8415 McCullough. 210-344-9291, for all your tire and automotive needs. They are located behind Northstar Mall, between San Pedro & McCullough - not exactly downtown - but very well worth the extra drive time. I've been in San Antonio almost 3years and it took me this long to find a reliable, trustworthy mechanic!

I've used other recommendations off this list and was not at all happy with the customer service or the work done on our vehicles. Homann's was customer service all the way, their fees were right around average or slightly below the standard for this area.

I've been there twice now, for my vehicle and my son's vehicle and the service was top notch, pleasant and friendly, and up front honest! If you want to try them out cal 210-344-9291 - and you'll probably be talking to Carolyn or Abel, and tell them you read a great referral from Melodie on City-Data. I'm very pleased to recommend them.
