I don't know, since I've never used that company, but I agree that price is a shocker. You could probably get a roundtrip to Austin on Southwest Airlines for less than that!

Yeah, Craigslist with caution. I've seen some folks post on there looking to carpool.

Yikes, I wouldn't do Craigslist. Maybe word of mouth or friend of a friend?

Is this for the long term? If so I would get another job or just move to Austin. I'm serious. The amount of time, money, stress, and environmental degradation is simply not worth it unless you are a lawyer, doctor, etc. There are new homes in South Austin going for $100/sq. ft. so affordability shouldn't be a deterrent.

I think it comes down to trusting your gut when you meet someone and see if it's doable and the two parties can get along.

Last time I checked, Nov. 2008, SWA does not fly to Austin from SA.

Not directly, but I bet it would be possible to cobble together an itinerary that connects through HOU or DAL. Surely a trip with a connection on Southwest would be cheaper (and slower) than a bus trip.

Stay in Austin during the week, and then go back home over the weekends.
