Redcats USA to lay off nearly 500 call-center employees - San Antonio Business Journal:

The company is relocating the call center functions to El Paso. A little bit of bad news to go with all the new jobs the city is creating.

Labor is cheaper in El Paso than it is here. You can pay bilingual reps 7.75 an hr there and they think its good money. A friend of mine went to El Paso to help with her grandmother she had 5 yrs call center experience and the most they could pay her at Echostar was 8.50 phr.

It's awful!
If anyone goes to the El Paso boards, low wages are a constant topic of discussion there.

Default Paradoxial...

On one hand El Paso needs the jobs, as does any city in this economy; but on the other hand, it only lends credence to the opinion that El Paso is a low wage city. I cannot argue with that.

On paper, about numbers, it helps. El Paso is creating jobs! That could be one headline, but then the other headline could be 'Third World wages available in the US!

That is a little hard, but it is what it is. I hope that the new Tech med school will add some prestige to El Paso, and make it a center of learning. If you ask me, it's not the jobs, or wages that hurts El Paso, it is the lack of higher learning institutions. Reputable ones.

I'm officially boycotting any company that outsources their call center or buisness operations. First to go, Chase Bank.

Then it looks like you will be boycotting nearly every organization known to man.

You'll certainly have to give up your wireless phone. AFAIK, there isn't a US wireless provider that doesn't have offshore call centers.

When I call T-Mobile I always speak to friendly Americans, never had a problem. Chase bank on the other hand is like dealing with robots who read off a script, I believe they may have their call center in the Philippines.

My current credit cards all have Us based call centers, at least who I've spoke with it would appear that way.
