Layer of leaves aids the lawn (http://www.mysanantonio.com/life/home_and_garden/Layer_of_leaves_aids_the_lawn.html - broken link)

Yes, it's good exercise, but dang, I have a huge live oak in my yard that puts out a ton of leaves.

Do you rake yours? I always have, but now

I used to rake like a fiend...me against 21 live oaks. After 7 years I wised up and bought a mulching mower. That fine leaf mulch really helped maintain moisture level and with a little lawn dressing applied the combination worked well feeding the yard...I prefer this method compared to using chemicals....au naturale

Two options...first, put a mulching blade on your lawn mower and speed the process up; or get yerself a lawn blower that doubles as a vacuum, you can suck those buggers up a lot quicker than raking them, then spread the chewed up leaves back on the yard evenly.

But it's been years since I've raked up and tossed leaves. I have always heard it is better (and easier) to use them to "re-nutrient" the lawn...

I always wondered about raking. It's not something found in nature. It's kind of weird.

I have raked ours for years. One word of advice since I frequently find myself in this situation, please make certain they are dry.

As the others have said use a mulching mower.

Years ago I heard of something that you can spread over the leaves (mowed) that help them decompose quicker and at the same time it does the grass /soil some good. Anyone know of what it might be?

No. I'd leave the leaves where they fall. They'll break down eventually... or blow into someone else's yard. Tell the neighbor's kids they can rake them into their yard and play in them. J/K

One vote here for not raking! I have plenty of oaks and the leaves will be breaking down soon enough, plus my lawn is always green and I never fertilize.

It's my "pottymouthrepairtechnique" for 2010. Every time I want to swear, I say "fudge tamales" instead. I haven't quite gotten into the habit yet, but I'm a work in progress.

Thanks, everyone, for the mulching/mulcher/vacuuming tips.

And rd, if you think I am comin' over and rakin' your fudge tamale leaves, you're pretty fudge tamale crazy.
