I find myself hesitating to suggest diners, Italian, Thai or whatever, because for all I know you have better ones where you live. However, I guarantee we have better Mexican! I would try as many dishes as you can during your visit, esp gorditas/puffy tacos, enchildas, caldo, tortas and tamales. There are tons of threads here on Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants, it's really hard to find a bad one (though I seem to manage!)

Also, though you have fine BBQ in MO, be sure to have some while you are here, esp brisket and sausage. My current fav is AUGIES by the zoo, but there are many great ones.

I know many here will pooh pooh Mi Tierra, but seriously. SUCH an atmosphere! And my niece is a hostess there. And it's good Mexican, dang it!

If you're looking for a Mom and Pop Mexican place, I will happily recommend La Terraza on Fredericksburg - not downtown but it's mighty tasty. La Terraza Mexican Restaurant - Google Maps

There are a LOT of super yummy Mom and Pop Mexican places in town.

OH! And you HAVE to have breakfast tacos. I grew up in central Illinois and lived in St. Louis for years. I had never heard of breakfast tacos 'til I moved here and I admit that I am an addict.

La Fonda (for margaritas in the courtyard)
El Mirador (for sopas on Sunday morning)
Chris Madrid's (tostada burger)
Taco Haven (breakfast tacos, though my fave is Tacqueria Chapala on McCullough Ave.)
Liberty Bar (cocktails & snacks)
Smokehouse (barbecue, and stop at Rubens across the street for tamales to-go)
La Tuna (for beers outside under the pecan trees)

What he said +1, but for Chris Madrids!

I have hosted many out of town business associates over the years and the regional "san Antonio/Texas" food items most people have never enjoyed or even heard of were the following:

Puffy Tacos - you will hard pressed to find these outside SA - Los Barrios

Brisket BBQ - Mostly only in TX - Rudys of course

Mexican Breakfast - breakfast tacos, huevos ranchos, chulletas, etc, etc.

Barbacoa and Big Red- A Mexican tradition that spans the SouthWest.

I make breakfast tacos for my Connecticut wife and her mother-in-law, and some of her friends, and they go crazy for the eggs, chorizo, and potato concoction! Not to mention the home made salsa!!! Up here, in CT, it hard to find mexican style chorizo, its mostly portuguese, which is dry, and not greasy.

If you're from Missouri, you can walk into any non-chain restaurant in San Antonio and anything you order will be better than anything you can get back home.
