Not really fond of WOAI as a news source, but I'm sure few people will have an issue agreeing with them on this one. Hardly a day goes by where I don't see at least one incident of a person yapping on the phone and almost hitting someone and/or going off the road.

San Antonio drivers top cell phone related crashes | WOAI.COM: San Antonio News

Best part is most of them are drunk after the sun goes down...

Miami is horrible for drivers yapping on their cell phones...even worse are the ones who text...I cant multi-task that way...I honestly cannot talk on the phone and drive at the same time!

I think is the same or worse than driving drunk.
At least drunk drivers are looking at where they are going.

Drunk drivers may be looking at where they are going, they just can't see where they are going or see 2 or 3 of where they are going. Put a cell phone in a drunk's hands while driving and you have a lethal weapon going down the road.
Cell phone drivers are about the same. Multi tasking on a freeway takes alot of reaction time away from driving. People have the attitude of I'm OK, it's the other guy who can't drive and talk.

This was the part I found most disturbing:

But a total ban on cell phones while driving is not very likely, according to one state lawmaker we talked to.
I don't understand why they wouldn't be concerned. Surely there isn't a lobby group working on the side of people that drive and talk/text on cell phones. Maybe if their phones started ringing more and their e-mail inboxes started getting more full..

The above quoted lawmaker probably hasn't been paid off by the insurance companies yet. Give it time...

Yeah it sad, and that is why my car insurance rates are sky high.

If they are going to make me stop talking on my cell phone, then the same better be said for police! I can't tell you how many times i've seen the cops yapping away while driving.

Ha! That's not going to happen. The same rules DO NOT apply.

and that's what bothers me. I live downtown by the police station. I'm assuming a shift change occurs at 11pm because I always see cops flying down I-10 at the speed of light to get back to the station. I exit on the frio/durango turnaround, and they never seem to have a care about the stop sign on Frio. Course if it were me that just blew thru it, they'd have an issue....

but back to the topic at hand i don't think it'd bother me too much if they made us go the "headset" route.
