That area is the first to get the Santa Ana winds coming over the local mountains.

My wife has been working on her Master's degree at Cal State, and wears a heavy coat during the winter months. It's usually a few degrees cooler than at our house in Highland.

In the winter months, the air becomes so dry that touching any metal surface will produce a pretty good shock.

Often the north doors to the university library have to be locked because of the winds.

I haven't heard of the winds doing any damage to nearby houses, though. There are some nice ones very close to campus.

The wind CAN blow hard in the Winter, but it isn't a constant or even a sure thing. It varies from year to year, with 2006 being one of the worst on record.

The wind warnings are always for areas below canyons and passes. The uni sits below both a canyon and a pass. Speaking as someone who lives in the footprint of the Santa Ana winds as they leave Cajon Pass, you will quickly find out about any weak spots that your roofing may have.

I go to Cal State San Bernardino, and as a 3rd year, I have experienced some very windy days. They actually closed campus a couple of years ago because it was literally TOO windy and too dangerous to walk on campus. Trees have fallen and stuff as well.

It's not windy ALL the time so I don't worry about it too much, but it does get windy from time to time. I've never heard of any damage to houses so I reckon you'll be fine. There are some nice areas around there and lots of places to eat nearby because it's a university.
