Can anyone tell me what this costs roughly - what are others paying for this?

It almost doubled the cost of my homeowners' policy. But personally I would not buy a home without it in California.

No idea how it works for condos. But check out this online premium calculator from the CA Earthquake Authority. It mentions condos:

We own rentals in SoCal...would not think of not having earthquake insurance on such expensive properties. One's a condo.

My wife and I are in coastal SoCal with a mid-century ranch style house. The property is currently worth about twice what we paid in 2011 and we do not have earthquake insurance. I figured that the majority of the value is in the land and that the structure would only cost about $280K-$400K to complete replace. 2,600 sq ft designer pre-fabs range between $300K-$500K. So we decided to build up a cash reserve instead. We also threw in 32 push-piers that go down 38 ft and 6 helical piers to lift and stabilize our house. The last earthquake we had (a 2.8 if I recall, epicenter about 1 mi away) felt like one minor jolt with no rocking.

I think earthquake insurance is right for certain situations, but it just didn't seem right for us.
