Excuse my stuttering.

To do chores around your house like anything from lawn work to fixer upper sort of work, painting, hammering, cutting, etc.

I have 2 really good guys here in Texas who can do anything from making your lawn look perfect to building a room addition on for you. I pay them $10 an hour.

Should I spend the extra money to bring them with me when I move to S.D. to fix up my new home like I want it, or could I find a good out of work or retired person in S.D. who will work for $10-12 per hour?

We used two different handymen in 2005-2006 in San Diego and they both charged $25/hr. I really don't think you're going to find anyone for $10 an hour (unless you want some lame-ass college student who advertises on Craig's List, and they probably won't even work for $10).

The two handymen did GREAT work for $25/hr (new drywall, drywall patching, painting. hanging cabinets, plumbing, electrical, you name it). The college kid did a crap job of even painting and wrecked the deadbolt lock on a door he painted. Plus he wanted a break every 2 hours and a one-hour lunch break...

Standards for "good" are pretty subjective.

The guys I know who I rank as good are in the $65 to $75/hr range.

They're licensed, insured and not working out of the back of an old minivan.

A legitimate business cannot operate at $10/hr period. At $10/hr they would be paying the state of CA for the privilege of working for you.

Anak is spot on. To the OP.... paying $10/hr for anyone doing the work you are talking about is a joke considering the minimum wage is $8.00/hr in CA.

Gonna go out on a limb here and guess that these workers you are paying are undocumented.
Pony up the cash and do it the right way or DIY it.

Your limb just broke off. They are U.S. born and raised as were their parents and grandparents. Looks like I will be bringing them with me for a couple "vacation" in sunny So Cal.

Thanks to everyone for your input.

I dont think they will mind coming out here for a vacation then....just not so sure about "sunny" SoCal part. It has been overcast here for several months now. Summer is just about starting.
