Hey all! I've been surfing the web for this answer and just wanted to get some direct advice on my situation..my bf and I are planning on moving to SD in Jan and are planning to have jobs lined up when we get there. We figured we would need $1500 to move cross country and another $2500 to secure living expenses.which leaves us with $3000 from savings while were there..is that a secure amt given well probably start our jobs within the first or second week of being there?

Depends on your rent. Most places will require a first and last payment AND security deposit. Rent is pretty steep..I would build a bit more into your housing budget. But it depends where you intend to live. Have jobs secured will be of utmost importance.

I've never heard or seen of a place here requiring first, last and a deposit. They just want the first month's rent and a deposit. Get rid of everything that can be replaced, because with only $7000, you'll need to cut your expenses.

Like AADAD said, get your job offers confirmed in writing. Your other expense will be your vehicles. Getting them registered here can really be expensive, especially if they're fairly new.

Are you absolutely sure you will have jobs lined up BEFORE moving out here? I assume you are saying you won't make the move unless you line up jobs first? I would NOT move out here without 100% jobs lined up with only $3,000 saved up. That really isn't much.

As well, if you can answer some simple questions:

- How much do you currently spend each month where you currently live?
- What monthly debt obligations do you currently have? (including possible car payments, life insurance, health insurance, student loan payments, credit card bills, etc?)
- What kind of jobs or how much do you anticipate your "lined up jobs" to be?

That's the first I've heard of it here, but they may require it because it's in RB, which is more expensive, plus it's also an income requirement. Most people (including myself) don't have that kind of money to put out for rent all at one time. City living costs less, and they don't want an exorbitant amount of money to move in. There are two cottages in my complex coming up for rent next week. Each one will be $825 plus a $500 deposit, no pet deposit, and security deposits are never returned. I moved in paying $765 + $500, and my lease says, "No Pets."

Most will not.

Since 1985, I've rented 12 different apartments and have NEVER been required to pay a last month's rent at move in. I've also looked at many more apartments that I didn't move in to and maybe one required a last month's rent.

You may or may not be right. Just stating what my son experienced when he rented his last apt. And the 3 other places he looked all required the same 1st, last and deposit.

Never? Has anyone in your area heard of small claims court? I've never had to go that route but wouldn't hesitate if I had a case.
