My name is Liz and I'm currently in school to be a vet tech and will graduate December of 2015 after graduation I plan on moving to San Diego, university city to be exact, I've heard that's the place to be to work and go to school and it's relatively safe. That's a huge concern for me is safety as I'll be going by myself, with my cat two westies and cane corso. I'm also trying to get some numbers together in my head for budgets, roughly with the salaries for vet techs I'm seeing anywhere from 2500-3500 a month for a vet tech. I plan on working in a vet clinic very soon to get experience under my belt as I've seen most places want at least a year of experience in a clinic, which will be no problem on my end. Anyways, I'm looking at safety, average monthly utility costs, what exactly my renting options are etc. anyone have any advice? This is my first really big move and I'm 22 now, I'll be almost 24 when I'm moving (birthday is in February) any help helps!

You're more than a yr and a half out. A lot could change in that time, just saying.

That's a very popular line of work and there is no shortage of Vet Techs in San Diego. Secure a job before you make the leap.

Safety, won't be an issue. San Diego is very safe, so is University City. San Diego is expensive as hell, however, so be prepared for sticker shock. That salary could easily be swallowed by San Diego housing costs unless you are frugal, or have a roommate.

This city is usually rated as the safest big city in America so safety shouldn't be an issue. University City has very high rent so don't consider it unless you're planning on going to UCSD and even then consider the Mira Mesa area as it is very close yet much cheaper.

You'll have problems renting with all of those animals, also.

echoing some earlier comments: University City is completely safe. I don't know what Masury, Ohio is like but maybe you think that all big cities are like Youngstown. San Diego isn't. The COL is very high so you will need roommates at first, and you will not get very far renting with all those animals. I hope you enjoy San Diego - most people do.

If you are good looking, then men will try to get you to drink and have sex with them or their friends.

Not to alarm the young lady and I wish her well but the SD cops crime stats for Jan and Feb of this year indicate 52 rapes among the 100's of other crimes. How can someone say this is a safe city.....Maybe some places are just safer then others

You're going to have some crime no matter what but it is good to know that San Diego is routinely rated as the safest (or at least one of the safest) big cities in the entire country and that both police coverage and police response times are excellent.
